This is a typical "boteco". Very grubby, sit on the street bar. Great for having a chope or bottle of beer with friends after the beach or just for a quick catch-up after work.

Food Scene

A bit grubby, but good. Sit outside on the veranda. Oh, and the chope is always cold.

A good option if you like a variety of salads and grains (the food offered here is gentler on the stomach). Watch out though, big queues every day.

Best juice in Rio. Try the "suco de côco" and "pastel de carne". Located in Leblon.

A true Rio classic, this restaurant/bar from the 60s is still packed on weekends for lunch. Great chope and German food (I always go with the Kassler). The bar has changed very little since its opening, much like the staff. Very nice at night, too, on the veranda.

This is my favourite restaurant/bar. You will find tourists, but this is typical local meeting place. Great chope, good food and always fun. Avoid Thursday nights unless you enjoy a bit of chaos as the street closes and packs with people (usually late teens, early twenties). I like Friday nights.

Sushi! This one of a bunch of sushi joints in Ipanema. It is famous for the Brazilian ingredients mixed into Japanese culinary. Worth it.

A new café owned and run by an Aussie. You will not find any Brazilians here, much less cariocas, but the coffee is good and the menu has some delicious breakfast options. Pricey.

Sightseeing

The Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas is perfect for a walk, run, bike ride and picnic. With lots of bars and restaurants and kiosks now scattered around the 7.5km bike path, it is a great place for a workout or stroll or romantic evening. The views are stunning.

Parks & Nature

The Arpoador area, at the eastern tip of Ipanema, has one of the best views of Ipanema and the Morro Dois Irmãos. Go for a walk to the top of the promontory or visit Praia do Diabo (from there you can see the tip of the Forte de Copacabana and Copacabana Beach. Perfect for sunsets during the summer, but very crowded.

Vista Chinesa is cropped up on one of Rio's many mountains, but is totally accessible. In fact, it is one of the most sought-after workout locations for many cariocas (cycling and running). A couple of kilometres from Ipanema, no more than 3 or 4, and you are at the foot of the climb. It is pretty steep, and is 4km, but is worth it. You can walk there, take the bus, get a taxi or bike (Itaú Bike stations are located close to the foot of climb).

The Floresta da Tijuca is a forest in the middle of Rio de Janeiro. Well worth a trip and walk around. There are guides available and many peaks you can climb with fantastic views. Pico da Tijuca is one of my favourites.

One of the highest peaks in Rio, the Pedra da Gávea is a must-do for adventurers. The hike up is pretty long (I would say medium difficulty with some tougher parts). Be mindful of your way. There are guides, which I recommend if you are going for the first time. One of the most incredible views of Rio.

Much more accessible than Pedra da Gávea, you can reach this spot by car. There is a car park at the foot of the climb, but the trail is very short, about 30 minutes. It has incredible views of Rio.

Essentials

Zona Sul is the local supermarket and there are lots of them scattered throughout Ipanema. This is the closest one to our place and the biggest in Ipanema. Try the pre-prepared pizza upstairs (all you have to do is pop it in the oven).
