Local eateries - yum!

Most amaaaazing Indian and Pakistani food in all of Sydney - people come from all over town to get Faheem's excellent curries, dahls, tandooris, naans ... delicious! Not the most picturesque place to eat (and they don't allow alcohol), but an absolute must if you're looking for a good take-away for a night at home.

This is a must try - if you're here for a couple of days choose a time when the queues are shorter :) Cow and The Moon won Best Gelato for their Macadamia Affogato at the World Gelato Championships in Italy ... it's seriously good ice cream. They also make a zillion other scrumptious flavours ... you're spoiled for choice. Good coffee too. (But like, gelato ... nom!)

This place is really special - it's not budget-friendly, and we'd recommend you book a while ahead if you can. If you're in the mood to splash out, choose the full degustation menu with matching wines (it's not far to walk home!) Russo e Russo gets consistently great restaurant reviews, and deservedly so. It's a very, very good place to dine. One thing: it's noisy, so if you're sensitive to loudness, maybe not the place for you :)

Another in the book ahead category on weekends, though earlier in the week it's possible to snag a table or a spot at the bar. Huge servings, excellent modern Australian food. Another restaurant that consistently makes the "foodie" lists for places you should eat before you ... leave Sydney :) Not budget-friendly.

The Vic is a pretty good pub in the afternoon, and great if you have mid-sized to teenage kids in your group. There's an outdoor verandah which looks over a half-basketball court, it's ok to skateboard, play ballgames etc. And dogs are welcome. Good local beers on tap, a slightly expensive (but good) pub food menu. They sometimes have live music in the carpark - check the Facebook page. The Vic is across the road from lovely Enmore Park. Not a bad way to spend an afternoon.

For lunch or dinner this place is pretty special. Not too expensive, possible to squeeze in without a booking. I like EDR's pho so much that I have them ... well, frequently. They do come with a three star MSG warning, but wow they're delicious. This place is also very very good for a no-nonsense banh mi or the lush roast pork banh mi (with crackling!) They do seriously good fresh juices (fruit, vegie, kale, the works), strong Viet-style iced coffee, and smoothies. Cheap and friendly! Not open for dinner.

The Queens is an old pub that's been given the complete Justin Hemmes treatment (for non-locals, that means a super hip makeover). It has a pretty nice almost New York-style bar downstairs and a cocktail bar upstairs. A real drawcard is super delicious yum cha/dim sum, which paired with nice wine or a boutique local beer is pretty special. The staff are great - professional and attentive. It's not a pub with pub prices, but the expense is worth it for the atmosphere. It will be really popular, so arrive early for lunch or dinner or call ahead for a booking.

Stanbuli is run by well-known Sydney restaurateurs, and the food is inspired by Turkish street food and avoids the Aussie cliches of mixed dips and kebabs. Seriously fashionable and seriously popular - you need a booking for a table, though walk-ins can sometimes jag a place at the bar. Platters are huge - we ordered way too much and ended up eating leftovers all weekend. Great vegetarian options! Not budget-priced.

Truly authentic Vietnamese street food in a cafe-style setting. Delicious delicious delicious! Favourites are the beef or vego pho, Bun Bo Hue (with a mountain of green salad vegies and herbs - nom!); also recommended are the pancakes, and any of the more substantial main meals. There are loads of vegetarian and vegan options on the menu, too. The Vietnamese coffee (with sweeet condensed milk and ice, or the fabulous egg coffee - just like in Hanoi) are really very good. The staff are friendly, it's close, and it's a winner. Great if you're on a budget.

Set in a pub, this is distinctly un-pub food - the idea is Hong Kong-style street food yumminess, accompanied by really good wines and a selection of boutique beers. The food *is* super yum, but take your $$$ with you. It's worth checking the website for frequent specials, such as 'Buns and Bubbles' at reduced rates. Usually busy, and as a result noisy. Not great for intimate soirees, but a fixture as a foodie destination on Enmore Road.

Build your own pita combo with a great choice of meats roasted over coals right in front of you. Home made everything, which is yummo, and also extremely good hot chips. Stix and Pita is virtually next door, so we go a bit (even in pyjamas sometimes, true story). Probably my daughter's favourite restaurant <3 Good for eating in (though it gets super busy and can be hard to get a table) or take away (what we normally do). Vegetarian options available, reasonably budget friendly. Highly recommended. Not open Monday or Tuesday.

Vegetarians beware, and vegans don't even go there ... this place is really for carnivores only. Makes sense: 'macelleria' translated is 'butcher'. Slightly unusual set-up for a restaurant - you go past a selection of uncooked meats and different cuts, choose one, choose a style of cooking, choose an accompaniment (salad, chips) and it's brought to you cooked perfectly, tender, and delicious. Drawbacks: depending on how busy it is, can be less than amazing service. Highlights: get a table next to one of the windows opening onto Enmore Road - a bit al fresco, awesome for people-watching. Mid-priced.

My grandma used to make the best melokia ever, and Cairo makes a pretty mean one too. It's seasonal, as all their food is, so you need to be here when it's fresh at the markets. Sit at one of the tables on busy Enmore Rd or in the very inner west courtyard, and sample absolutely delicious home made Egyptian food. Highly recommend the vegetarian plate - it's enough for two! And don't be afraid to have a dessert :) On the corner of Wilford St, only a hop, skip and a jump from Young Henrys.

The Smelly Goat is an odd name for the classy bar upstairs at Queen Chow, the former Queen Vic Hotel on Enmore Rd. I love the atmosphere here - it's dark and cosy, the design of the place is a mix of chic 1930s-style furnishings, with intimate nooks to curl up in and excellent bar staff to mix very nice drinks and offer advice about wines from the very good wine list. May be a bit un-pub for some (my husband, for one) but I love the feel of the place. Not budget-friendly, busy on Friday and Saturday nights, best in the late afternoon before the crowds get there.

Your basic pub, which is becoming a bit of a threatened species around here. Bar at the front, two pool tables out the back, with a basic pub food menu and tables in a slightly uninspiring beer garden. What it lacks in atmosphere outside it makes up for inside, with big, comfy booths to settle into with a cider. Close to The Enmore and popular for drinks before and after shows, so occasionally crowded. Super friendly and professional staff. No kids allowed.

Our local pub, and a really good way for out of town visitors to get an idea of what Enmore and Newtown are all about - the Warren View welcomes dogs, and on a busy afternoon or evening the place can be full of humans and their besties. Hep cats head here for cocktails, and in particular martinis, because it's run by the crew behind Cantina OK, number 23 in the top 50 bars in the world (who judges? How? We don't know, but hey.) There is a lovely and quite extensive menu of cocktail options that changes frequently, and the staff *really* know their stuff. We learned a lot about martinis just in the course of ordering our first round, and settled into a relatively comfy booth for a second drink too. Creative with the cocktails and also with a bar food menu, it's worth a visit. Not budget-priced.

Brilliant spot to watch Newtowners young and old, and get a dog fix if you're missing your pooch. Camperdown Park has a *very* interesting history - it was, as its formal name suggests, a cemetery. And its inhabitants still lie below the huge expanse of grass everyone plays on - the headstones were moved inside the walls of St Stephen's church, within the park's sandstone walls. A great spot for a picnic - pick up supplies from King St, which is very close.

The church is a lovely little sandstone building, but the cemetery is the really interesting thing here. It's so quiet! And right in the centre of Newtown that's unusual. Some believe that the tiny cottage on the right of the gate as you enter belonged to Eliza Donnithorne, the inspiration for Charles Dickens' Miss Havisham in Great Expectations. But that's never been proven. The great fig tree is one of the oldest in Australia, and predates white settlement. A fave hangout for alt and goth kids living in the hood.
