There is a beautiful hike up to Big Bald Mountain from the cabin. You will enjoy panoramic views if you hike the 5-1/2 mile trail to the top of Big Bald. Round trip to and from cabin is around 11 miles. You can access the Appalachian Trail by walking to the end of the cabin driveway turning left and heading up to the top of the hill (1/2 mile to the trail access at the intersection of Streets Gap Rd and the Appalachian Trail.
