Born to the drummer of Fitz and The Tantrums, this Italian-inspired, Missoula-esque espresso bar is located just down the road from the house. It's an immaculate yet cozy neighborhood coffee shop and bakery, showcasing a display of hip vinyl records that are played in the cafe. "It takes a little bit from all of the best coffee shops I've visited or worked in and brings it all into one place," says Wicks, who spent years as a barista in Seattle before his music career took off. "This is the cafe I always wanted to hang out in."

Esquire named Charlie Bs one of the "15 bars you should drink in before you die." Locals report that you'll find the usual crowd throwing them back at Charlie' as early as 10 a.m. The lunch crowd drinks a little lighter, as most folks who hit Charlie's midday are coming for the famed food at the attached Dinosaur Café. The Dinosaur serves up Cajun food, and despite being located a bit North of the heart of Creole cuisine, is one of the most beloved spots in Missoula. Once you're done eating, you can have any drink for a good price. "Without question, this is the best place in the country to find a beautiful woman who can gut her own trout."

Parks & Nature

Few communities enjoy a place quite like the 60,000-acre Rattlesnake National Recreation Area and Wilderness just north of Missoula. A well-developed trail network in the Rattlesnake’s lower reaches gives you a variety of options for day trips – or you can pack overnight gear and venture farther into the high-country wilderness. Despite its name, there have been no verified sightings of rattlesnakes in this area. You will, however, find ample opportunities to view many other wildlife species, including beavers, deer, elk, mountain goats and black bears. During spring and fall, you can see more than 40 bird species.

For a spectacular bird’s-eye view of Missoula and surrounding mountains and river valleys, don’t miss this Lolo Forest trail to the top of Mount Sentinel. It’s a great alternative to the “M” trail up the mountain, which rises above the city just east of the University of Montana. If you travel 3.1 miles up Pattee Canyon Road from its intersection with Southwest Higgins Avenue, you’ll see the trailhead on the left (north) side of the road.

Waterworks Hill is a short hike that has one of the best birds’-eye views of the city’s railroad yards, downtown and into the Bitterroot Valley. The hillsides feature rare communities of cushion plants, including the Missoula phlox and bitterroots. Hikers are asked to stay on established trails and obey landowner signs and fences. The steepest part is at the beginning, then the hike is a gradual climb. From here you can reach the Peace Park (white peace sign made of stones), the historic Moon-Randolph Homestead, or loop around through Cherry Gulch back to the parking lot.

This outstanding 42-acre city park runs along clean and beautiful Rattlesnake Creek for about 1 mile and is a diverse mix of cottonwood bottomlands and coniferous forest. A paved trail runs the length of the park and numerous unpaved paths go near the creek and toward more undisturbed places. This city park has an impressive interpretive birding trail named after Arnold Bolle, a famous conservationist and former University of Montana professor. A series of interpretive signs along the trails identify the most commonly seen birds; more than 100 bird species have been identified here.
