Entertainment & Activities

From our station at the Sea Point Pavilion you can easily ride along the coast and enjoy a day on the beach, or a meal or drink at one of the many bars and restaurants in the area. You can pedal along the Promenade all the way to the shopping and dining mecca of the Waterfront, into the world class eco-hub at the Green Point Park and Cape Town stadium precinct, or you can explore the CBD. Cape Town is flat and easy to cycle, so riders of all ages and fitness levels can ride our bikes. Cycling is active mobility. It’s good for your body and mind, and bikes are great for the environment. We think a ride along our route is one of the Mother City’s simple pleasures!

There is more to Century City than a vast array of shops and giant office buildings. There’s also a 16-hectare wetland and bird sanctuary, with 8km of navigable canals where you can take a 35-minute ferry boat trip and go on self-guided or guided walks. Intaka Island is home to over 120 species of birds and 212 indigenous plants, with two designated hides for bird-lovers and photographers to enjoy. The ferry boat ride takes you along the canals and through Century City, while a guide points out interesting architecture and shares informative facts about the birdlife you encounter along the way. There are also workshops for kids . Entrance is R14, or R40 with a ferry boat ride.

Romantic dramas, timeless classics, documentaries and action movies are all shown at various beautiful outdoor venues across Cape Town, including Hillcrest Quarry, V&A Waterfront, Kirstenbosch and the winelands. You can hire a chair and blankets, or bring your own blanket if you prefer. There are various food options available (from pizza to burgers and nachos), along with coffee, wine and craft beers; but if you are on a budget you can take your own picnic (alcoholic beverages are permitted, except at wine farm venues). It’s a novel way of watching a movie and the closest you are going to get to re-living the days of going to a drive-in. Tickets from R79.

Essentials

Camps Bay doesn't have a big resident population and, as such has virtually no shopping. There is one small, not very well stocked, Pick n Pay supermarket. The nearest decent supermarkets are along Main Road in Sea Point - Checkers, Pick n Pay and Woolworths Food (like M&S). Otherwise in the opposite direction (12mins) there is decent shopping in Hout Bay. The Woolworths Food and Spar supermarkets have both been recently extended and Checkers is also OK. Some good Delis in Sea Point Main Road. No local butcheries on the Camps Bay side of the mountain that I know of - other than in the supermarkets in Sea Point or Hout Bay. All the specialist butchers that we go to are either in the Souther

A cuppa while your clothes are cleaned - the shop that serves up first-class Brazilian coffee – the only one of its kind in the country - from an incredibly sexy, central espresso machine. Smooth, soft and slow-roasted, this steaming brew is so tasty that its makers recommend it’s sipped ‘naked’ in its purest form, sans milk, sugar or other ‘contaminants’. And for those who need more than a shot of caffeine to get them through the day, I Love My Laundry dishes up an unusual Korean-style Dim Sum, steamed and sold on-site from 7am to 7pm. Flavours change daily, but the staple kimchi filling – a cabbage, radish and turnip combination.

The Bo-Kaap Museum, situated in the historic area that became home to many Muslims and freed slaves after the abolition of slavery, showcases local Islamic culture and heritage. The Bo-Kaap itself is well worth a visit. Colourful houses, steep cobbled streets, the muezzin’s calls to prayer, and children traditionally dressed for Madrassa, add to this unique Cape experience.

Ask anyone who’s been to the top of Table Mountain and they will corroborate: there are few places on earth where the view has this ability to take your breath away; where – whether it’s icy cold or scorching hot – it’s always worth sitting down and contemplating what you see. And while most people have to travel halfway across the world to enjoy this experience, South Africans – but more specifically, Capetonians – are uniquely privileged in that they can visit any time they want!

Boulders Beach near Simon’s Town has a lot going for it: the ancient granite boulders protect it from the wind and large waves, making it an ideal swimming spot for kids. The beach is always clean and safe, because it falls under the Table Mountain National Park Marine Protected Area. It is rarely crowded, and kids will be delighted by the stunning rockpools. But the soft white sand and warm(ish) waters are not the only reasons why 60,000 visitors a year make their way along the coast, past Simon’s Town, to Boulders Beach. India Venster comes with terms and conditions. Be careful, hikers say, this is the most difficult, albeit the most fun way of scrambling to the top of Table Mountain. Next to India Venster, Platteklip may well appear sedate. You might want to have conquered your fear of heights before you do the trail, and be prepared to climb over boulders and inch your way along ledges that appear a little unreliable. The trail runs right under the cables of the cable car and gets its name from the shape of the ravine, which at a certain angle (and from a particular viewing point) resembles the continent of India (venster is Afrikaans for 'window').

Chapman’s Peak Drive is often referred to as one of the most scenic drives in the world. Cruising the 9km route with 114 curves, a rocky coastline dropping into the Atlantic Ocean and colourful sandstone sedimentary rock towering above you, is a jaw-dropping experience.
