Good coffee (but ask for a double), really good food, great ice-creams, close to the beach. It can get really busy but ask at counter even if it has reserved signs on the tables. And they will always serve ice cream and coffee.

Amazingly fresh bakery with what’s renown for being the best bread in Auckland. Along with delicious donuts, croissants and other patisseries made in the traditional French way. Their yeast has been cultivating for over 500 years! Great strong coffee too.

Great coffee. If you like strong coffee then their “Road Runner” will shake your socks off. They have three others to choose from if you’re a little more faint hearted. The organic is my fav.

Great coffee, great food, perfect for brunch or lunch. Cool little area with some cool homeware and furniture design shops around it. Also Farro's gormet food store nearby. You could combine this visit with a bike or walk around Cox's Bay and Grey Lynn Parks - they link up and this place is in the middle of the link. Both have playgrounds and Grey Lynn has a bike/scooter park.

So many great bars and cafes along Ponsonby Road and the best place to shop in town - all the NZ designers have stores along this road. Ones to check out include Workshop, Deadly Ponies, Karen Walker, Kate Sylvester and if you love art and interesting gifts try The Poi Room and The Garden Party. All walking distance to each other. Make sure you visit Ponsonby central for coffee, lunch or dinner - great atmosphere. Park on Rose Road for free parking and an easy walk.

Parks & Nature

Meola Reef which can be seen from our house is a lovely place to go for a walk and it can be combined with a new walkway that starts at the Scout Hall on Meola Road and runs right around the waterfront ending up at the end of Westmere Park Avenue - a must walk especially at high tide. End your walk with Bruch at Seabreeze or Catroux Cafes. Directions: Best to park on meola, walk around reef, turn left towards Westmere. Take path to left just before scout hall. Turn left again through a gate that takes you onto a walkway. Stay on this until the end where you will go up some steps to Westmere park Ave crescent. From here you can turn left (low tide) and walk around to Garnet road. Or turn right and walk streets to Seabreeze cafe, or to make it shorter you’ll see a track that will take you back to meola road.

A lovely safe beach that's 2 mins walk from home. Walk down Joan St for fastest access or through Coyle park for scenic route. Best at mid to high tide. There are some lovely shady areas under the trees to sit out of the sun. An easy place to relax for a couple of hours.

An incredible day trip with scenic views, caves to explore, incredible wildlife and history. Kids love it. It’s a relatively easy walk to the top where you'll have epic views of the city. Catch the ferry from ferry terminal in CBD. Bus 18 from pt Chev shops will take you near terminal. Pending on your group you can also Kayak over with "Ferg's Kayaks" - a truely memorable experience either way. Takapuna Beach, the Takapuna Beach Cafe and the playground make for an easy quick get away where you'll see a bit of the city, can have a swim, grab some food - dine in or take away. Add on a walk around Northhead tunnels in Devonport for an awesome adventure and WW|| history. This takes a few hours. You can also catch ferry to Devonport.

You'll find lots of white sandy beaches in your life but the west coasts black sand, moody hills and native bush are something else. All the beaches out west have there own uniqueness but Piha is the most easily accessible and it has a little culture you can take in while you are there if you want to go to the local Bowling Club or RSA for something to eat or drink after your walk. Or try Murry's beach bar for some great tunes and a burger. I suggest the walk at the northern end that takes you over the hill and down into an interesting beach and lagoon at low tide. Be very careful swimming at the main beach but there are some lagoons and a river that are safe for kids. Great beach for experienced surfers. Piha does get busy in summer and the sand can be HOT under foot. If you want something more off the beaten track try Muriwai (gannets) or Karekare (where the Piano was filmed). All these beaches are epic on a wet and windy day too and you'll feel like you are at the end of the earth (because you kind of are).

Fabulous for kids and adults a like. Takes a good few hours to do it all. Easiest and most fun way to get there is by taking the Tram from “motat museum of transport” on meola road (buy tickets inside museum). Parking near zoo can be terrible so I’d recommend this. Western Springs park has an awesome kids playground- walk left exiting zoo and follow path around, 5 mins walk from exit.

Check out what's on first but this place is well worth a visit. Beautiful Architecture, a fun room where the kids can get involved in some art form or another. A cool water feature outside kids can get wet in. An incredible park next door with wonderful trees to climb. Right in the heart of the city with some little streets you can explore. An easy walk from Britomart if you catch the train from Mt Albert.

Northhead and its tunnels are a VERY scenic, interesting and adventurous day out for kids and adults. Download the brochure for a map and the history here. You could combine it with the Deveonport Ferry but it does add to the length so I'd only advise this with kids who don't mind walking. For the brochure search online for "doc nz north-head-self-guided-walk" (sorry this won't let me add the link)
