A beautiful garden like setting with dining inside and out, newly owned by a young couple from Ghent, Belgium. It has been a reliable and fairly extensive menu. They have a really beautiful and well stocked small bar, with live music some evenings in the summer.

East Shore Smoke House

One of a kind, quite literally, with Bison hiding on western ranges on the top of a mountain that provides spectacular views of one of the most beautiful glacial terrains in the world, bordered elegantly by the Mission Mountains.

This one is a little too far afield for a day trip from the Flathead (although, in Montana we just like to drive, so it's certainly possible), but I am throwing it in here in case you're driving to or from southwest or central or eastern Montana along I-90. Like the Bison Range, there is nothing quite like this anywhere else in America. A still working cattle ranch dating to the early 1800s. A rich and fascinating history is detailed in the exhibits here, and it's a great place to stretch your legs while driving through another beautiful ranching valley in Montana. Teddy Roosevelt was a friend of one of the original ranchers, and Norman Maclean fished the Clark Fork river that runs through.

Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site

Like the Bison Range, there is nothing quite like this anywhere else in America. A still working cattle ranch dating to the early 1800s. A rich and fascinating history is detailed in the exhibits here, and it's a great place to stretch your legs while driving through another beautiful ranching valley in Montana. There are a fair number of wooden steps with rail to climb to the observation platform, so caution is advised for the elderly and close supervision of the young is important.

It is a great, vibrant school with outstanding liberal arts traditions of over a century, and notable schools of journalism, business and writing, inter alia. The town itself is ever renewing itself, set in the confluence of five valleys. It is a major concert town, with most acts from the beginnings of their careers to legends like Paul McCartney and the Rolling Stones making it a point to play there.

The summer playhouse is greatly enjoyed during the regular season and for special events throughout the year. Restaurants come and go, but are usually top notch. Plenty of shopping for souvenirs, sampling the local specialties (don't miss Eva Gates' Huckleberry Jams) and trying excellent local brews and coffee. There is live music in the summer at a few of the venues.
