A legendary beauty spot on the South Downs Devil’s Dyke, just five miles north of Brighton, offers stunning panoramas, a record breaking valley, a curious history and England’s most colourful habitat. At nearly a mile long, the Dyke valley is the longest, deepest and widest 'dry valley' in the UK. Legend has it that the Devil dug this chasm to drown the parishioners of the Weald. On the other hand, scientists believe it was formed naturally just over 10,000 years ago in the last ice age. With a little exploring the Dyke's story starts to reveal itself: The ramparts or walls of the Iron Age hill fort can be seen when you walk around the hill and the remains of the curious Victorian funfair

Explore over 250 acres of parkland where paths and resting spots dating back to the 18th century once existed for pausing to enjoy the views back towards the lakes and out towards Fletching village. Copses of trees are dotted around the hillside, attributed to 'Capability' Brown and creating the English landscape appearance he was so famous for. Also dating back to the same time is Irongates Lock, built by the First Earl of Sheffield to allow navigation of the River Ouse.

Lewes Castle was begun soon after the Battle of Hastings in 1066, by the Norman William de Warenne, a close friend of Williamthe Conqueror. The impressive Barbican Gate was added in the 14th Century. Climb the steep zig zag steps to the Keep to get stunning panoramic views of the Sussex countryside all the way from the Downs to the coast. Fire a crossbow, build an arrowslit, dress up as a lady, peasant or knight, and watch the story of Lewes in the mini cinema.

No visit to Lewes is complete without spending some time in the Needlemakers with its ancient brickwork, massive beams and echoes of a fascinating industrial past. Where once Broad’s candles were made and – during WW1 – surgical needles were manufactured, there is now a flourishing group of SPECIALIST SHOPS and a CAFÉ. Park in the adjacent West Street or North Street car parks. The shops are hugely varied but they have one thing in common. Everything on sale is chosen for its originality and its quality of design and excellent value for money. A wonderful place for buying presents.

Our favourite place for dinner locally. The Bull won pub of the year in 2016. The food is modern and innovative and the service is warm and friendly. In the Summer the garden is vibrant and at weekends has a great pizza shack and a fire pit where you can toast marshmallows over the fire.
