It was erected at the turn of the new era, at a position that allowed for control of the passage across the Krka River. Auxiliary units (cohorts) were stationed here in a small camp constructed in the eastern part of the complex.

One of the first things that visitors see when entering Šibenik by road is the silhouette of St Michael’s Fortress, which crowns the pyramidal hill above Šibenik’s Old Town.
It covers the surface of about 2600 m2. During archaeological excavations, architectural remains and plenty of culture-historical artefacts from the times of the Venetian rule were found, but also the rests of the material culture from the Iron Age, which proves the fact that the Croats built the fortress on the site of an ancient Illyrian town.

During archaeological excavations, architectural remains and plenty of culture-historical artefacts from the times of the Venetian rule were found, but also the rests of the material culture from the Iron Age, which proves the fact that the Croats built the fortress on the site of an ancient Illyrian town.
It is located close to the Cathedral, in the former Duke's palace. In its collections the museum holds about 150000 items worth exploring the Sibenik past from the earliest times to the present day.
