Food Scene

Little Italian bakery with ridiculous sandwiches and mediocre coffee. We will always pick up an assortment of sandwiches, take them back to the house, and eat them on the floating dock.

If you're willing to drive about a half hour, this is our favorite local "upscale" restaurant. Set in an old mill, the food is great, the ambiance is wonderful, and they boast a strong selection of local wines!

Expansive lawn with several picnic tables. Great place to bring friends and family and play corn hole and just talk. More laid back than Breaux. There is apparently a nice restaurant here, but we've never been.

This place sort of speaks for itself. Always busy, full assortment of slots and table games, and a horse racing track. Weekend nights are especially crowded. Great steakhouse (probably the best in the area -- Final Cut Steakhouse). The real fun, however, is to book a dinner reservation at the "Skyline Terrace." So wild. You watch the horse races (every ten mins, a new one) while eating at the buffet, and you can place bets too! You can also go outside and watch them thunder past you at the finish line. Super fun for the kids. Note: The casino part still permits smoking indoors, so can get a little smokey.

Parks & Nature

There are several hikes around the Harpers Ferry area. This is by far our favorite. About one hour up, one hour down. Easy enough to do in regular shoes, but definitely a hike. Make sure to get all the way to the top of the lookout. Absolutely beautiful, soaring views of the town of Harpers Ferry and the confluence of the Shenandoah and the Potomac. Bring a camera! The downside is the parking at the trailhead is a nightmare. There are only like 12 spots, and they're along a road that is not easy to turn around on. The "easiest" way to access it is to walk across the bridge from Historic Harpers Ferry. That just takes a little more time.

The Harpers Ferry National Historic Park is overall just a wonderful place to spend a day exploring. Lots of neat little shops in the historic town, and cute mom and pop shops. Great for history buffs.

If you're up for the 1 hour drive, this is an absolute gem. Hot mineral springs that used to be the bathing area for native Americans, and then George Washington and Lord Jeff. Call ahead to the Berkeley Springs State Park and make a reservation at their "Roman Bathouse." It's about $35/30 mins. Up to four people but those four people need to be comfortable being naked together! Otherwise, just get your own bath. Incredible. Also have spa services.

Entertainment & Activities

Tubing, guided rafting, and kayaking in Harpers Ferry take place either on the Shenandoah or on the Potomac Rivers. Generally, the Shenandoah is the slower, lazier river, while the Potomac has more "white water." (Do not expect any rapids, however.) River and Trail offers tubing and rafting trips on both rivers. Their Shenandoah trips PICK UP AND END DIRECTLY across the river from the house. For ~$40/person, they give you a lifejacket, a tube, and unlimited rides upstream. More seasoned tubers bring/rent additional tubes/floats to carry beer and food. Book early online, and don't forget to check out Groupon or Living Social for specials first. This is the height of relaxation!

This is basically a one stop shop for all outdoor "fun." Tubing, kayaking, ropes courses. We've heard it's ideal for tourists. Never been, but we hear it's great.

Shopping

The best way we can describe this place is . . . authentic. This is a weekend (outdoor) flea market where you can pick up a vintage typewriter for $20, antique cookware, war-time memorabilia, refinished tools, and hunting equipment. There are TREASURES here. Don't be afraid to bargain.
