The Canal was built by Thomas Telford to allow sea going vessels to safely navigate from the East Coast to the West Coast avoiding treacherous waters along the North coast. The Canal runs from Inverness all the way to Fort William. It is now used more by pleasure craft. The village of Fort Augustus, has 5 locks coming down through the village and then entering into Loch Ness itself.
