Parks & Nature

(2.5mi, difficult): A 30-minute switchback climbs 800ft to provide breathtaking views of Lake Superior, Pigeon Point, Isle Royale and the Susie Islands. Well worth the effort! Directions: 18mi east of Hovland on Highway #61. Turn right onto County Rd #17 at Grand Portage. Stay on #17 up to the trailhead – you’ll encounter some turns, but always remain on 17. The only trailhead signage is fire numbers 183 and 193. (20min drive from Hovland)

This gem offers the best swimming around. This gorgeous shallow beach goes for a long distance; lake bottom is nice sand. Fishing also an option. Directions: Long drive up the Arrowhead Trail. Drive gravel road 20mi. Turn left, short drive down to a parking area for the beach. If you cross a small bridge over the lake, you just missed the left turn down to the parking. (35min drive)

This gem offers the best swimming around. This gorgeous shallow beach goes for a long distance; lake bottom is nice sand. Fishing also an option. Directions: Long drive up the Arrowhead Trail.
