This is about visiting one of the largest pest proof wildlife sanctuaries in the world right on our doorstep!!!! The majestic 797m Mt Maungatautari ( sanctuary Mountain) is a mainland ecological island created by a 47 km pest proof fence, the largest of its typein the world!!!! Dewi and I joined a guided tour for 1 1/2 hours about many of new Zealands rarest and most endangered plants, insects, birds, fish, geckos, frogs, bats and flora that co-exist in this very special spectacular environment, on one of the many tracks to the 16m viewing tower. This was an amazing place- it was like being in a living preserved wildlife gem, where you were right there spotting the animals. highly recommend the increidble environment. so peaceful. Nature at its very very best!!!!

Ring fenced to keep predators out, its a Sanctuary on Mount Maungatautari for native New Zealand wildlife. Visitor Centre and entry to hike to the top.

Allow 1-2 hrs, and it's free! An ecological 'island' where you will enjoy native wildlife, plants and great walking trails. I recommend the Southern Enclosure (Te Tuia a Taane) get up close with native kaka, peek inside weta nest boxes and climb the canopy viewing tower for a birds eye view of the forest below. Guided tours available. If using GPS enter 99 Tari Road, Pukeatua.

Amazing flora and fauna and some fantastic guided tours. A visit here is like stepping back in time - the birdlife in incredible. Book well ahead if you're planning a visit here as all of their tours are very popular.

Ecosanctuary contains wild kiwi, tuatara, kaka and many native bird. Best place for chance sighting of birdlife. Walks from 30 mins, 2h and 6h over the mountain.
