The Tarka Trail is a series of footpaths and cyclepaths around North Devon, England that follow the route taken by Tarka the Otter in the book of that name. It is a figure-of-eight route, based on Barnstaple, and covers some 31 miles of path.

Many cycle trails you can follow, along the coast (old railway lines, so easy cycling) with cycle hire at Barnstaple & Bideford. This is named after Tarka The Otter, written by Henry Williamson, which was based around this area.

A beautiful traffic free cycle/walking path from Braunton to Meeth. Most of the trail is riverside with lovely views and wildlife. tarkatrail.org.uk

The Tarka Trail The Tarka trail runs from Braunton to Torrington and is lovely for cycling. You can hire bikes from Tarka Bikes at Barnstaple and either cycle to Braunton and on to Crow Point, or toward Instow via Fremington Quay. Cycles can also be hired from Torrington. If you're…

“Stunning and unusual scenery. About a 40 minute drive from Ilfracombe. Go via Woody Bay to take a lovely winding coastal road (there is a toll to pay on the way). Go to Mother Meldrums (see cafes for info) for an amazing cream tea with a view! If you have time is worth continuing a little further up the road to Lynton and Lynmouth - see below.”
