A walk up to the viewpoint above the lighthouse is particularly spectacular at dawn! But also wonderful at any time of the day.

Castlepoint is about 40 minutes' drive from Riversdale but well worth the trip as it is a very beautiful area with a couple of good walks. The walk to the lighthouse is shorter but if you enjoy a more strenuous hill climb, the walkway that is located at the south of the beach is highly recommended for the views are quite spectacular.

The Castlepoint Lighthouse Walk is a short trail that follows the cliffs above Castlepoint Scenic Reserve to one of the most iconic landmarks in New Zealand. Take in breathtaking views over the Wairarapa Coast, fossick for fossil shells on the beach below, and revel in the history of one of the country's last remaining beam lighthouses built in 1913. You may even unexpectedly encounter a colony of fur seals sunbathing in the reserve. Castlepoint Lighthouse is the North Island's tallest lighthouse standing 52 metres above sea level and is one of only two left in New Zealand with a rotating beam. It is owned and operated by Maritime New Zealand.

This walk leads to Castle Point Lighthouse and then onto lookouts. The views from these points give great views of the sea and of Castle Point and the Wairarapa east coast.

Beautiful inlet and stunning coastline. Can be very windy, but gorgeous on a good day, and interesting on a bad one!
