old timey railroad in the heart of the redwoods. great for the little ones that love trains!
Roaring Camp & Big Trees Narrow Gauge Railroad is a 3 ft narrow-gauge tourist railroad (no loads of lumber running by in these babies!) that starts from the Roaring Camp depot in Felton, and runs up steep grades through redwood forests to the top of nearby Bear Mountain, a distance of 3.25 miles. …
You can take a old narrow gauge rail road up into the mountains or to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.
Historic area with fun old town feel. You can ride the train down to the ocean/boardwalk and back. You can also access Henry Cowell park for some amazing hikes.

“No trip to the Bay Area would be complete without visiting the redwood forests! For nature-lovers, this is an absolute must-see. It’s a bit of a drive to get to this park, but it’s totally worth it. This state park is home to over 40 acres of old-growth redwood trees, and it contains some of the tallest and oldest trees in the entire world. In the early 1900s, Teddy Roosevelt visited this area and helped spur an initiative to protect the trees. They are one of the most spectacular natural species in the entire United States and the Bay Area is one of the best places to see them. ”

“Great hiking in nearby Aptos. Mountain biking trails in Nisene Marks are less arduous than the Demonstration Forest, and can also be accessed from the Demonstration Forest (which is the top of Nisene Marks).”
