I would recommend a visit here early on because the museum provides a back drop to the history of the town and the surrounding area. The information is well presented and there is a cafe with lovely views over the descending valley to the River Avon.

This is an UNESCO world heritage site. The major preserved sites of Blaenavon Ironworks and Big Pit, together with the outstanding relict landscape of mineral exploitation, manufacturing, transport, and settlement which surrounds them, provide an extraordinarily comprehensive picture of all the crucial elements of the industrialisation process: coal and ore mines, quarries, a primitive railway system and canal, furnaces, workers’ homes, and the social infrastructure of the early industrial community. The area reflects the pre-eminence of South Wales in the production of iron, steel and coal in the 19th century.

There are lots of good reasons to visit Blaenavon's World Heritage Centre. It is home to the Big Pit mining museum where you can experience what life was like for those adults, pit ponies and even children who used to work down the mines. At certain times of the year - especially late October and December - special steam train trips are run where passengers of all ages get to meet the volunteer guys and ghouls who work in the station and on the train which at Christmas time include Santa and his elves.
