Was ihr unternehmen werdet

It is not uncommon to feel both intrigued and confused by a piece of contemporary art. Allow me to guide you through the galleries of Tate Modern on a curious inquiry into what we see, and hopefully, during the 90 minutes that we spend together, you will acquire the skills of looking, seeing and talking about art.

What we see in art is always influenced by a whole host of assumptions. When we see a piece of art, we are not just looking; we are reading the language of images, be it Monet’s Waterlilies or a feminist sculpture. Instead of lecturing you using a list of dry biographical facts, I would like to encourage you to trust your own eyes and instincts and think of art in front of you in a more personal way.

How did abstract art come about? Does the gender of the artists matter? What is the place of women in art making? Are there any differences in the approach to art making between male and females artists? What happened to sculpture in the 20th century? Is photography art? Who decided what is art and what isn’t and can art change the world? Do we have to like what we see in order to understand it and vice-versa? We will talk in-depth about all of these questions.

To ensure the smooth running of this experience, both the host and the guests are obliges to wear a face mask and encouraged to use the hand sanitiser provided by the gallery.

Hi, my name is Julia; I am an art historian, freelance researcher and a founder of www.nejasartwalks.com, a bespoke provider of art and history related experiences in London (IG @nejasartwalks). I previously worked as a Collection Research Assistant at the Tate and I am now hosting one of the most successful Art Experiences in London.

At Tate Modern, we will look at some fabulous art from a fresh angle and try to experience it on a more personal level, without any preconceived ideas. Ask questions! Get excited! Let's talk about art in a way where no answer is too big, or too small, or too right, or too wrong!

All ages are welcome, no specific knowledge of art is required, and the Experience is easily tailored.

Great way to experience the Tate Modern. It was really helpful for us because our knowledge of modern art was not that big.

This tour was unreal. Julia knew some much of the artists’ backgrounds which helped us to relate to the art in a different way, and she also helped us to understand developments in modern art trends - abstract art, cubism etc. We all felt like we related to art in a way we had never done before and it was all down to Julia. Can’t wait to do another tour!!!!!

Our time with Julia was amazing. She helped guide us through understanding and appreciating art at a different level than if we were to attend a museum without her expert guidance. I especially enjoyed her "insider" take on art, which removed a lot of the stigma I stereotypically would expect from the art industry and allowed me to enjoy the time with her and the experience that much more.

This tour is great - Julia is knowledgeable, friendly and happy to tailor the tour to your interests. She communicates really well - why something matters, why it is the way it is, what we should look for in it. Would recommend.

The. tour of the Tate Modern with Julia was fantastic. She knows the Museum very well and expertly directed us to the galleries of greatest interest after asking. us what we were particularly interested in seeing. Julia did something really great - rather than just explaining the history/intent behind each work, she gave us some tools and tips in order to "see for ourselves" and discover things on our own in some of the artwork without just being told. This was very illuminating, especially with the most abstract pieces. He knowledge of the Museum and its collection is vast, and her interest and passion for art clear. I loved this tour, and highly recommend Julia!

Overall great experience! It was my first toms visiting the Tate and I couldn’t have had a similar experience without having the knowledge and guidance of Julia throughout the visit.
