After more than two decades in the IT sector, including three years working in the US, Ranjini returned home to Trichy to pursue a slower, more meaningful way of life. She and her husband shifted towards organic farming and converted the first floor of their home into a small homestay where they could welcome travellers, share South Indian hospitality and introduce guests to the cultural heritage of Tamil Nadu’s famous Temple City. Hosting became a second career that blended livelihood, tradition and personal connection.

A homestay built on intention and care

Ranjini started hosting in 2017 with a simple principle: keep the experience personal, warm and respectful of guests’ privacy. Her first guest stayed for a week and left feeling “like a newborn lady” after recovering from years of chronic illness — a moment that convinced Ranjini to continue hosting.
She now manages five listings but accepts only one family or group at a time, ensuring guests feel at home and have the space to rest, reflect and explore Trichy at their own pace. Many guests describe their stay as “like being in their own house,” a reflection of her approach to comfort, safety and thoughtful hospitality.

Strengthening Trichy’s cultural tourism

Located in one of Tamil Nadu’s oldest cultural centres, Ranjini introduces guests to the depth of Trichy’s heritage — from 2,000-year-old temples to hill shrines, cave temples and sprawling complexes that span more than 100 acres. She guides travellers on the best times to visit, how to navigate the vast temple grounds and how to experience the city’s spiritual and historic significance without feeling overwhelmed. For guests who prefer independence, she provides schedules and directions while maintaining privacy. For others, she offers full-day cultural itineraries with temple visits and authentic South Indian meals that reflect the traditions of the region.

Trichy has more than 2,000-year-old temples. Even five days are not enough to see everything. We guide guests on the timings, routes and how to experience each place properly.

Local experiences shaped by tradition

Food is central to the way Ranjini hosts. She prepares traditional vegetarian South Indian breakfasts,  including local dishes such as paniyaram, which guests rarely find outside. She also adjusts meals based on age, preference, dietary needs or allergies. For guests who prefer continental breakfasts, she adapts the menu without compromising hospitality. This personalised approach helps visitors experience the cultural nuances of daily life in Tamil Nadu, from local ingredients to family-style dining.

Our breakfast represents our culture; traditional South Indian food you don’t get outside of a homestay. But we always adjust based on guests’ needs and preferences.

A small homestay with meaningful local impact

A small homestay withmeaningful local impact

Though Ranjini is modest about the extent of her influence, her homestay supports several local livelihoods. Transport operators benefit when visitors arrive, and guests often purchase fresh produce from her organic farm. Income from hosting on Airbnb helps sustain her household while allowing her to continue farming and cultural guiding. Her hosting has also helped create lasting friendships.  . Guests have celebrated major life events in her home, including one family who spent weeks isolating during the pandemic before their son married in Trichy, and later returned with his wife to stay again. Many guests remain in touch, sending messages long after their stay.

There is an impact, even if it’s small. People who run transportation businesses get income, guests buy produce from our farm, and income from hosting on Airbnb helps us run the show.

Hosting as continuous learning

For Ranjini, hosting remains a source of daily enthusiasm. Each visitor brings practical lessons borne out of new experiences, and new learnings, such as insight into t other cultures. Her son, a recent hospitality graduate, has now joined the family business, adding renewed energy and professional grounding to the homestay. She sees hosting as an ongoing journey that has expanded her perspective, strengthened family connections and given her community more visibility among travellers seeking authentic cultural experiences.
