Prague's Old Town Herberghaus is a unique place in touch with history:
- the original house was built around the time Charles IV. was king (from that period only the gothic cellars now remain)
- first written document mentioning the house dates back to 1406 AD at which time it used to be a blacksmith's forge
- in later centuries a lot of other craftspeople lived and worked in the house: cutlers, hatters, carpenters, later glaziers and most recently locksmiths (who still have a shop downstairs)
- in 1671 the original three gothic semi-detached houses were partially torn down and reconstructed in early baroque fashion
- in 1713 AD the Old Town's tailors guild procured the house, adapted it into a hostel for journeyman tailors who wandered from town to town (so called "herberg") and it stayed so for another 250 years
- its current appearance is a result of the late 19th Century adaptation of the house and of the expert renovations between 2009 and 2011
