Psinthos, Griechenland

Psinthos is an authentic, ‘listed’ traditional village that traces its history to the early 14th century. It is located on an elevated position at an altitude of 300 plus meters with sublime views towards the west and south-west of the island. Exploring this mountainous region further, you will however, discover 360-degree panoramic scenery in all directions and within a short distance.

The central square boasts five traditional tavernas as well as a number of cafes, a local mini-market, bakery and pharmacy. These and other independent, family owned restaurants (all highly ranked as ‘excellent’ on TripAdvisor) in the immediate area attract locals from around the island, who especially flock to the area on weekends. One corner of the square is adorned with a particularly picturesque byzantine, Greek orthodox church that is dedicated to Virgin Mary and is a central hub of the community.

Strolling outside of the square you will find narrow, winding streets lined with a mix of old, traditional stone and modern houses. Four roads enter and leave the village, allowing you to easily travel and explore in all directions. Psinthos provides a very different experience from the overly touristic areas of the island and an opportunity to experience real Greek village culture in quiet and tranquil setting that is close to nature.

The village’s central location makes it ideal for explorers and adventurers, with many hidden gems off the beaten tourist trail. You will find a wide variety of flora and plants in the area, it is ideal for long walks in the countryside and you can enjoy numerous routes, the air filled with the aroma of wild sage, oregano and many other herbs. Much of the region is covered with pine and cypress forests, providing a great opportunity to escape the heat of the summer. Throughout the summer months there are also a number of local Greek festivals in the region for you to experience.

Nearby, you can also find remnants of the Italian occupation of the island in the mountain area of ‘Profitis Ilias’ reaching almost 800 meters altitude. This includes many alpine style buildings, villas and hotels, some now restored, but many still abandoned and derelict including much of village square of Eleousa with its impressive circular pond and Mussolini's Villa de Vecchi in the mountains high above the village of Salakos. Seven Springs and the Valley of the Butterflies are easily accessed and definitely worth visiting. Remember to bring your camera!
