Cregg Castle is a magical place built in 1648 by the Kirwin Family, one of the 12 tribes of Galway. It is set on 180 acres of pasture and beautiful woodlands.
Your host,Artist Alan Murray who currently hosts the Gallery of Angels in the main rooms.

Die Unterkunft

I have nice small double room with high ceiling available at the front of the Castle for your short or long holiday.
I also have a five bedroom listed, so other guests maybe staying aswell.
The toilet and wash basin are en-suite however with no hot water.
The shared guest bathroom where you can enjoy a nice hot shower is on the ground level below. The large main rooms are used as an art gallery space, but also can be used by you for entertainment, reading or just for chilling out away from your room. Steven who runs Bush craft camps in the woods on occasions, so it’s got an interesting atmosphere. I do facilitate film and photo shoots occasionally so please come to stay, with a flexible attitude to how quite or busy it may be, from day to day. For me that’s the great and exciting thing about Cregg.

Zugang für Gäste

The Castle is mostly available to explore and enjoy. (With the exception of our private bedrooms off course.) The kitchen is also available if you want to make breakfast, lunch or to cook a meal. The guests have their own little fridge and your own press with table ware etc.
Heads up!
This is a work in progress, My aim is to restore the Castle, it was locked up, for 4 yrs only 4 years ago. It’s a big place so please do expect to see some areas which are unused, unfinished and things like - fly’s in cobwebs and lots of weeds. Sorry but I don’t have any staff here, and there just isn’t time in my life for that stuff. It's kind of impossible to keep them away from here, nature just keeps creeping inside.
I tell myself it all adds character anyways.
The winter months it’s pretty cold here so bring warm clothes. The castle has huge rooms and costs too much to heat the whole building, so we tend to just heat the rooms as and when we need them. Your room has a heater which will keep you warm. Kitchen has a mobile gas heater.

If you request, - I can light the open fire in the front room.
Why not, enjoy sitting in for a few drinks and a game of snooker or cards for the evening.

Yes, I will be available most of the time. If something is requested I'm happy to help and aim to make your stay more relaxed and enjoyable. Off course I have lots of other things going on in my life too, so please do not expect my full attention and presents at all times. If I cannot be not here to let you in, I can leave a key out.

The woodlands are beautiful for natural walks, visit our timeless natural spring well, which is where we get our water. The old walled graveyard which has an old ruin of church which is strangely placed right in the middle of the huge field. Take another walk on the grounds along the river which used to power the old mill house. The have my beautiful 2 year old pony " Arrow" she is such a sweetheart and a real cool 4 year old donkey "Houdini" who both like to hang out in the back yard and the walled garden - apple orchard. They like to go for walks with me and love meeting the guests too.

The place is not clean or attractive, including the furniture and kitchen. Needs much more work to be in the AirBnb market

What a treat to be able to stay in Cregg castle! The room I stayed in is big & clean with lovely views and the bed was extremely comfortable. I was welcomed by Alan and he gave me a quick tour of the place. More importantly, he explained how to use the heaters, where the bathroom with hot water is and how to get hot water in the kitchen. My best tip for this place is to make sure you take wellies for a walk around the gardens and meet the animals!

The castle had been in my uncle's family since the 15th century ... as kids we had often heard about 'the castle in Ireland' ! .... I was tasked with going and gathering the history ! Alan has a a huge stack of papers and notes gathered over many years, and a super impressive family tree (which I have put up on Ancestry - under Blake family tree - Cregg Castle. Dusty Springfield used to stay here in it's heyday ... she called it her 'healing place' and loved the quietness ! Been a grand home in it's day ... needs lots of TLC to restore to it's former glory ... but oh - so much more interesting than staying in a modern hotel ! Easy walk up through a field to a lovely little old church and graveyard - put the wire back on the gate so the cows don't get in !

One of a kind experience. Had no expectations when booking a castle in a country I've never been in, but this exceeded any expectation I had. Driving there in the dark was a little sketchy, but once we got there Alan welcomed us warmly and gave us a tour around, showed us his beautiful artwork, AND treated us with homemade apple pie. He was very accommodating and made sure we were warm. The castle itself is beautiful and Alan did a really good job of renovating it while also preserving the history and authenticity of it. The view from the room was unreal, I wish we could have stayed longer. Alan is a very kind soul and I would highly recommend this place if you want a unique stay and good company.

We had a great time staying at Cregg castle with Alan and the others that were present. The room was clean, had an en suite toilet (we showered downstairs in the shower with warm water), and the vibe of the room was neat (high ceiling with planked woodwork). The mansion and estate are in the process of being maintained and renovated and were very fun to explore.

Hands down THE coolest Airbnb you will ever stay at. Alan was great and showed us our room, the kitchen, and common areas. We do wish we had had a bit more of a tour, but took the liberties to do our own within the castle and the outside grounds. When we explored the outside grounds, our feet were quickly soaked from the wet grass, but it was well worth finding random ruins and the old cemetery. Beware the cows in the pasture around the cemetery! We weren't sure if they were mean mugging us or waiting to see if we brought them food. (I don't really think they would have done anything.) The castle itself is a castle, so it's super cool, but it is a little run-down. We loved it so much, but don't let your expectations get too high. The room was clean and towels were fresh, but it is a work in progress, so keep that in mind! We had so much fun staying in the castle. Best of luck to Alan and the other artists on their work and restoring the castle to its former glory.

I discovered my passion for Art activities early in life and haven’t looked back since. Art College taught me the fundamentals of art, but it’s the journey of life that provided me with inspiration. I feel my Paintings are very personal and reflects my own Timeline of life, In my process of painting I have found doors for me to explore and develop a greater inner spiritual connection to myself and our external Angels. I Love to sense and discover connections in life and with wonderful people and enjoy where and how they go…… My exhibition of original oil Paintings hangs in the two large reception rooms of Cregg Castle. I call it the “Gallery of Angels”. It’s a dream space to have my own semi-permanent solo show.
I fell in love early in life and built a little purple cottage in the countryside of Galway. Lorraine and I got married and had two wonderful boys, Jaeden and Zach.
My twin Ivan, a sculptor now living in Whales, and I as young artists took on spaces for exhibitions because we didn't want to charge extra to clients as in commercial galleries. I was always interested in spaces, and ended up building my second home as well, with a purpose built Montessori school which I ran with my wife Lorraine. I took care of the project management and the arty play part. I feel some choose our school because there was a male influence and contribution, and feel it helped with some of the more distant relationships between some hard working fathers and their kids.
While working on other creative projects, I also developed a therapeutic painting Workshop fusing my passion, with my training and skills in NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) and Timeline therapy. I call it “Butterfly Wings”. It was suddenly the time to put it into action. I had recently separated from my wife and was seeking many new positives changes in my Life. I started searching for a healing place to host my therapeutic workshop.
My grandfather used to own Cregg Castle and then was passed to my Aunt, so I thought I would visit Cregg and see what the new owners were doing with it. When I got there the Castle was in disrepair and had been sadly boarded up for 4 years.
I contacted the new owners to see where they stood and a few months later I sent them my strong proposal where I aimed to take on the castle as is, and start an artist’s residence and a cultural music venue. Thankfully they accepted my proposal and we have a great Win Win arrangement in place. I had a lot of red tape and restrictions holding things back however I’ve been pretty much living my dream here at the castle for 4 amazing years. It’s a perfect space /place for artists to live and work together. It certainly is for me, I love it here, so much because it just feels like the right path for me and also I got to connect with so many creative, talented people here. When my Aunt had the Castle as B&B with a strong traditional music energy here, Dusty Springfield, Sinead O Connor, Shane Mac Gowan from the Pogues, all stayed here on occasion, back in the day. Dusty wrote in the guest book, it was her special healing place.
I’ve had quite a few artists in residence over the years, come and go, and have hosted many music and cultural events, film and photo shoots, bush craft courses and other random stuff. I have now most parts of the castle as liveable again. Artists have helped me fix up spaces as and we needed them, each artist having a living/studio space and also use of the many large communal spaces. Last year I opened one room for Airbnb guests. I have many foreign visitors all year and they are all delighted to come and stay in a real Irish Castle.

My Pony - Arrow, Donkey - Houdini and Cat - Pixie are a huge contribution to the positive healing energy here.
Recently when An Ait Eile approached me about with the Monastery concept I was very interested. It was easy to see how it could map onto what my hopes and plans for the castle. So we held a PreMonastery event which was a great success. And since that I with Kashi from Cosáin, a local wellness group hosted an amazing “Butterfly Wings” weekend. (Therapeutic Painting Workshop)
Over the last year or so, I did a lot of work designing and fabricating two, 40ft high cube containers which I have created all on site at the Castle. My aim was firstly to create a purpose built mobile event venue and an alternative workshop space. The design includes a large indoor/outdoor space between them, with a mobile roof covering and a neat modular floor system. More work is needed however to bring them to the standard required for holding events, and with the added potential as developing it further as a demo concept home. This project has me excited, motivated and inspired. I see it as a real positive alternative to the mainstream approach of building another traditional home. I took the opportunity to create a new start in life, moving towards a positive creative lifestyle. Freedom is my top Value and this approach has given me that sense of freedom to move. Also it gives me the ability, to build my own home for a lot cheaper than traditional building. I feel we all need to simplify our lives, to our basic needs and have time to enjoy the - true simple pleasures and treasures in life.

I reckoned if I take care of the castle the Castle will take care of me and many more….
