Sightseeing

Sintra is a picturesque Portuguese town that is set amidst the pine-covered hills of the Serra de Sintra. This hilly and slightly cooler climate enticed the nobility and elite of Portugal, who constructed exquisite palaces, extravagant mansions and decorative gardens. The variety of fascinating historic buildings and beautiful scenery has established Sintra as a fantastic tourist destination, and has since become the most popular day trip from Lisbon.

Parks & Nature

It is the first municipal beach we find when coming from Lisbon, sandwiched between the Fort of S. Julião da Barra and the tip of Rana. It has a large expanse of sand and is much sought after by Surfers, Windsurfers and Bodyboarders, where several competitions take place as a result of the strong waves. There is a pedestrian area surrounding the beach, where you can find many restaurants, bars and outdoor coffee shops. It has good access and parking. There is also an extensive green area north of the Marginal.

Arts & Culture

The town of Sintra is Europe’s finest example of the whimsical and colourful Romanticism style of architecture. This elaborate 19th century design style was inspired by the love of art and the mysticism of ancient cultures, to create decorative and flamboyant buildings, of which the Palácio da Pena is the greatest example.

Shopping

Set west of the city centre near the coastal resort of Cascais, this sprawling mall serves Lisbon's Estoril coast and even Sintra, such is its inland location. It's a favourite out-of-town meeting place and very popular at weekends, especially during evenings when families gather for dinner in any one of the dozens of restaurants lining the Food Hall before heading for the multiplex cinema (all films are screened in their original language). Just about everything the average shopper will need is available here: furniture, home decoration, fashion and accessories, toys, presents and gifts, jewellery and watches, books, stationary, telecommunications and computers.
