The abbey dates back to 1123 and was once the second-wealthiest and most powerful Cistercian monastery in the country, behind Fountains Abbey, prior to its dissolution during the English Reformation. You can book on line ahead of your visit. There is a lovely cafe on the opposite side of the road and also walks through the woods

Take a short boat trip and explore the ruins of Piel castle and enjoy a drink and something to eat at the 'King of Piel's' pub or the little cafe at Rampside.
