Food & Drink in Kropa

If you prefer to eat out, there are a few options in Kropa - each offering something different.
C.Bar. The best place to get a beer and meet the locals is ‘C Bar’ which is across the bridge, opposite Anvil Cottage, on the other side of the main square. It’s open every day from 17:00 except Monday when it’s closed all day. Mattias who runs the bar speaks good English and will happily tell you everything you need to know about Kropa. He’ll also make you a pizza.

Further along the main street, at the start of the town is gostilna (restaurant) Pri Jarmu. This is an excellent choice if you need more than a Pizza and they serve HUGE portions of excellent home made food. It’s also a great place to get ice-cream in the summer and on Sunday they serve a delicious lunch menu. It’s closed all day on Wednesday & Thursday.

If you walk in the other direction, past Anvil cottage on the left hand side of the river is Gostilna (restaurant) Pr' Kovač. If you’re lucky enough to visit when its open and serving food - they serve impressively good food in a nice room filled with old pictures and objects from Kropa. If they are not open, try knocking and asking if you can book an evening meal.

Sightseeing

Follow the road out of Kropa in the direction of Jamnik and the road winds up the hillside until you reach the small but stunning church (Sveti Primož) in Jamnik. It doesn't matter what time of your you visit, the church , which sits on a ridge overlooking the valley towards Ljubljana, is always delightful. If you're relatively fit, you can easily walk to Jamnik in about 1.5 hours, either vis the road or the forest footpath that starts behind the gothic church. From Anvil Cottage, walk towards the shop and turn right just before the basketball court.

If you're feeling energetic, or looking for a good half day hike from Kropa, the Partizan Hut at Vodiška Planina sits above Kropa on the Jelovica plateau. From Anvil Cottage, cross the river and find the path that goes up to the Church (the one with the bell). Follow the path up, past the church into the forest path. There are two or three routes, the one on the left is the fastest but it is also steepest. The middle path is the most popular and direct route, and you can also continue off to the right and then loop backwards - but this route is not well signposted. The hut is open 365 days per year and serves tasty food and drinks, so take some money and you can enjoy a well-earned beer at the top. This hidden gem sits just above the neighbouring village of Kamna Gorica. According to Wikipedia, the castle was once the seat of the Upper Carniolan holdings of the noble house of Ortenburg. First mentioned in 1263 as castrum Waldemberch, it was administered by the knights of Waldenberg. The ruins of the castle are not that spectacular, but when you reach them, you'll be rewarded with spectacular views along the valley to Mt Triglav - Slovenia's highest mountain. The town of Kamna Gorica (small rocky hill) is also beautiful and covered in wooden waterways.

A short walk out of Kropa are the twin villages of Dobrava (Srednja Dobrava and Zgornja Dobrava). Whilst they are only a short distance from Kropa, they sit in a delightfully quiet and sunny plateau with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. It's easy to walk or drive and there's plenty of parking outside the pub - Gostilna "Pri Marički".

Another small but beautiful castle which is about 20 minutes drive across the valley from Kropa. Grad Kamen sits at the entrance to a mountainous valley, so it's a great place to start and end a day of hiking.

If you're coming to Slovenia, no doubt you'll know about Slovenia's most beautiful lake. However, if you want to make the most of your trip, here are a few tips. Parking at the train station (Bled Jezero) is cheaper than parking in town, and it's a short 5-minute walk down to the lake. If it's open, Café Belvedere (Kavarna Belvedere) offers amazing views across the lake. It's also a great place to indulge in Bled's famous vanilla and cream treat - Kremsnitsa. Suping (Stand up paddle boarding) is a great way to enjoy the lake and get to the island. http://supbled.si is a great choice, and they'll meet you by the boathouse near the path to the train station.
