Museum of Wayne County History

The Museum of Wayne County History, run by the Wayne County Historical Society, a nonprofit organization, is located in the historic town of Lyons, NY. About us: The museum is housed in the former Wayne County Jail and Sheriff's residence built in 1856 and used until 1960. The 24 cells are still intact with the original inmate art work on the walls. Learn the stories of some of the inmates that served time at the jail, and tour the three floors of exhibition space, such as Lyons Pottery & Clyde Glass, the Military Room which spans the War of 1812 to Vietnam War, a Child's 1856 bedroom and much more. The museum is located at 21 Butternut Street; a short walk up from lock #27. Guided tours available daily, large groups please call in advance. A two story carriage house is also available to tour weather permitting. Admission into the museum is $4 adults, $2 students and Wayne County Historical Society members are free. The building was also the only place in Wayne County where a man was hanged. In 1860 William Fee was convicted of the murder of an unknown woman traveling through Clyde. He was convicted of murder and sentenced to hang. Many of our paranormal investigators say that he just might be still walking the cellblock. Because of this, we have been included on the Haunted History Trail of New York State. Click HERE to be brought to their website. The Lyons Farmers’ Market, the oldest and largest in Wayne County, has been formed to provide healthy, fresh food and horticultural products to the County and surrounding areas, and to encourage commerce, entertainment and trade in Lyons. Located on Church Street in front of the Wayne County Courthouse, the Market is open every Saturday morning, 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., mid-June to late October. Many of our vendors accept WIC coupons. The 2016 Farmers Market opens June 18th and runs through October 22nd.

Ohmann Theatre, Inc.

History of the Ohmann Theatre The Ohmann Theatre was built in 1915 by Burt Ohmann in Lyons, New York. Burt operated the theatre through the 1930's. His sons Robert and Myron took over the management of the theatre together through the following twenty years. Robert continued to run the theatre as the sole proprietor and theatre manager until the late 1980's. In 2005 his oldest son Bob brought the theatre back to the Ohmann family with a complete reconstruction. Through its long and proud history the Ohmann Theatre has been a live theatre house, the site of vaudeville and musical entertainment, and even a venue for amateur boxing. Of course, the movie screen was always there, lighting the faces of the finest actors and the most touching cinematic moments, from the earliest silent films through the talkie era and beyond. Now back in the Ohmann family and renovated to modern standards but still with the old-fashioned charm and character of the original house, the lights are shining brightly at the Ohmann Theatre again. Highlights of the Renovation Reconstruction of interior, with reconfigured seating, restored woodwork and trim, new flooring, and bathroom facilities. New seating, built to match by the Irwin Company, the same firm that built the original seating in 1914. Original seats were saved for use in the balcony. New projection system, with both film and DVD capabilities. New sound system, with special surround-sound and digital stereo. New stage sound and lighting. The 1,000-member theater society seeks to record and preserve the architectural, cultural and social history of American theaters. The group praised Ohmann for his efforts to bring the theater up to modern standards while retaining its old-fashioned charm. Approximately thirty-five people attended the presentation, including representatives from Lyons National Bank, employees of the Ohmann Theatre and from St. Lawrence Homes, the project manager from contractor Chrisanntha Construction, State Assemblyman Robert Oaks, the Mayor, Supervisor and several members of the Ohmann family. An article also appeared in the Finger Lakes Times, July 20: "Ohmann honored at Ohmann".
