Formerly a chalk quarry for the adjoining, now defunct, cement works, this is an internationally recognised nature reserve managed by the Bucks, Berks and Oxon Wildlife trusts with interpretation centre and cafe. A short drive away.

The Ridgeway trail starts at Avebury in Wiltshire and finishes at Ivinghoe Beacon. Ivinghoe Beacon and Pitstone Hill are walkable from The Garden Room. Parts of Grim's Ditch an Iron Age earthwork running the length of the Ridgeway and on in to Dorset is clearly visible on Pitstone Hill with other archaeological features such as pits from neolithic flint mines and faint remnants of burial mounds.

Part of ZSL (London Zoo) and its rare species breeding programme, the animals were first moved here for safety during WW2, coming by train to Dunstable and then by road. The elephants famously walked up.
