If you head out toward Whiskeytown lake, you will pass through a great historic area from when Old Shasta was the main town in the area (back when Redding was called "Poverty Flats"). There's some cool stuff to see, and museum activities when they are open, like Shasta State Historic Park Courthouse Museum.

Downtown Redding transit
There's a railroad track that crosses through the middle of town. Sometimes the train will stall on the tracks and that can be annoying, because it isn't always a problem, but when it is, it's REALLY annoying.
The best way to avoid getting jammed up by this is to cut over to Eureka Way/299 before you get to the center of town so that you can just take the overpass right over the tracks :)
