Kalona is now better known as the “Quilt Capitol of Iowa” boasting a plethora of stores dedicated to preserving the art of quilt making. We’ve taken the title seriously, too, which is apparent through over 40 quilt designs paved into the downtown streetscape. The quaint downtown center features one-of-a-kind dining options, locally-owned antique and craft shops, and longstanding service establishments. The city’s rich cultural heritage dates back to the late 1830s when pioneers began immigrating from the east. The Amish arrived in 1846 when Iowa gained statehood.
