Neighborhoods

Our residential area, Mhlatikop (directly translated to ‘sugar head’), is a hilltop oasis nestled amongst sugar cane farms and pristine bushveld. It’s a beautiful retreat just off the bustling N4 transport route, and your stay here promises rest and rejuvenation. By day, an orchestra of bushveld birds welcomes all, and by night, the warm air is flavoured with the raucous chorus of Bushbabies, Toads, Nightjars and Spotted Hyena. In the background, the sugar mill hums as it churns and boils, as trains en-route to Maputo, clatter through the sugar cane valley.

City/town information

Malelane is a small farming town in Mpumalanga that was founded in 1949. The name is either derived from the Swazi expression "eMlalani", which means "place of the palms”, or the expression "lala”, which means "to sleep". The Malelane area was originally a bush area and was known as “The Kruger Shooting Concession”, where leopard, lion and buffalo were often shot as a sport, but in 1926 the area was proclaimed as the Kruger National Park and hunting stopped. An aerial photograph taken in 1964 of Malelane and the surrounding area, shows that there were only 23 buildings in and around town; including two banks, two filling stations, the local school, two shops, a hotel and four churches. The town really started to boom when the local sugar industry became the economic driver of the town. A sugar mill was constructed for the Transvaal Suiker Beperk (TSB) and the company had to build an additional 70 homes close to the mill to accommodate its personnel. This small residential area, became known as Mhlati Kop (Sugar Head), and is today still a much sought-after village in which to reside. For a long time, the sugar mill was the lifeblood of Malelane. It offered local residents much-needed work opportunities and reduced the cost of transport for the sugarcane farmers. Today, Malelane town is an attraction to many tourists because of its proximity to the Kruger National Park and other bush destinations like Mjejane and Marloth Park, but it is also a farming town producing sugarcane, subtropical fruit and winter vegetables. The development of the prestigious Leopard Creek Golf Club and luxury residential estate that was built on the Crocodile River overlooking the Kruger Park, attracts the world’s elite who descend on the area for the annual Sunshine Tour’s Alfred Dunhill Championship.
