Family beaches

Wells-next-the-Sea has a lovely wide sandy beach, backed by pine woods, but it's quite a distance from the town. Park in the beach car park and later on have a snack or drink in the beach cafe or pop on the little railway which runs from the town and save your legs. Two hundred colourful beach huts add charm while there's also a lifeguard on duty for added peace of mind. Youngsters will love splashing around in The Run at low tide, at which time you can walk a mile or so out to its end. But remember the tide comes in quickly so if you hear the hooter, it's time to come back.

Roll up your trousers at Hunstanton and go for a paddle or take the kids crabbing in the shallow salty rock pools. For the more adventurous, the shallow open water here (it's at the mouth of The Wash) is perfect for kitesurfing. The cliffs look like a layered cake, and the seafront retains the air of a Victorian seaside resort – unsurprisingly, as it was purpose-built as a bathing resort in 1846. Now known as Sunny Hunny, this is our only west-facing beach, so you can see incredible sunsets. Look to the horizon and you can see Holland... okay, it's Lincolnshire really!

Mundesley beach is backed by a raised promenade lined with colourful wooden beach huts. Cliffs form the backdrop to the beach with pretty cliff-top gardens where visitors can shelter and sit. In the clifftop gardens is the Mundesley Maritime Museum which is believed to be the smallest museum in the UK. Today it is used as a Coastguard Watch manned by volunteers. It is open everyday from May to September and closed on Saturday. Next to the museum is the monument set up in memory of the Royal Engineer Bomb Disposal Personnel who were killed clearing British landmines along the Norfolk coast between 1944 and 1953. There is a designated dog free zone area from May to September. This is clearly marked on the map which can be found on the Beach Information Board at the entrance to the beach.

As well as a fantastic stretch of sand Happisburgh beach is home to the iconic red and white candy-striped lighthouse.

The beach at Great Yarmouth runs parallel to the Golden Mile so you can wander from the ice cream shack to your deckchair with the minimum of effort. There's crazy golf, trampolines, boat trips, donkey rides, and a range of attractions and amusements. No chance of the kids getting bored here.

Dog friendly beaches

Drive up Beach Road in Brancaster, park close to the golf course, and then stride out onto the flat sand. Turn right and you'll head towards the tidal salt marshes of Scolt Head; left and you'll be faced with a huge expanse of doggie playground. Remember to bring a stick or ball.

Dogs are allowed on the beach at Wells all year round subject to certain restrictions. A dog-free zone operates for the first 200 yards of beach from the main entrance so that people can dig in the sand without fear of finding something unpleasant, but there are no restrictions from the pinewoods entrances. Great wooded area at the back of the beaches for shaded walks in the heat!

The beach is enormous, totally unspoiled and has been voted the best beach in Britain. There's a large car park, managed by the Holkham estate, and then a pleasant walk on boardwalks through the pine woods before you reach the beach proper. While dogs and walkers can enjoy Wells and Holkham Beach all year round without restrictions, caution is advised on the adjacent Holkham Nature Reserve. Here dogs should be kept on a lead or under close control so they don't disturb or distress any of the wildlife in the area. Holkham Bay gained worldwide publicity when it featured in the Gwyneth Paltrow Oscar-winning movie Shakespeare in Love.

Winterton beach has the wonderful advantage of a vast expanse of soft sand which is backed onto by the rolling dunes of the National Nature Reserve. The stretch of sand between the dunes and the sea gives a lovely uncrowded and open feel to it, and also means you can spread yourself out without being on top of other people. It's a popular beach as it’s very close to the village of Winterton on Sea, so in the summer months it gets busy, but it’s definitely not one of the those beaches that has limited space, and it doesn’t get nearly as busy as its neighbour Hemsby, or even Great Yarmouth. You don’t feel that you have to rush to the beach in the morning in order to get a place! It's a great dog walking beach, especially in the winter when it's quiet. Parking is very easy, always a plus when you come to the beach. There is a large grassy car park at the top of the beach and it’s only a short walk to reach the sand.

The flood defence bank is good if you enjoy being by the sea but like to keep paws clean. Heacham has two beaches - park at the North beach and walk north to Hunstanton either on the beach or the flood defence bank. If you go for a walk towards the end of the day, you will be treated to majestic sunsets.

There are no dog restrictions at Thornham beach. From the car park by the creek, you can walk along the raised embankment which leads down to a quiet beach. Be careful not to disturb birds who nest in the sand dunes.

Beaches with seals

Horsey beach is a wild, unspoiled sandy beach where nature abounds. Backed by one of the largest sand dune systems on the east coast, this beach is often deserted outside of summer. Even in the summer you won’t have any trouble finding a spot to yourself. The main attraction at Horsey though are the seals. From November to January Grey Seals take to the beach to give birth. A stroll along this stretch of beach during the winter will give you the opportunity to get up close (but not too close) to these fantastic animals. Throughout the rest of the year you can see the seals bobbing around in the waters off the beach. In the waterways just behind the beach is the Horsey Windpump. The National Trust-owned windmill is an impressive wind-powered water pump with a history of bad luck. Over the years it has been damaged by floods, a lightning strike, a collapse, storms and gale-force winds meaning it is constantly in a state of restoration.

If you want to see the seals, this has become a popular place to see them. In the winter months the seal colony from Horsey has spread out to now include Winterton. Even in the summer months you'll see the heads of seals bobbing about in the water, or you may even catch them sunbathing by the groynes. You can easily walk from Winterton to Horsey beach and get the spectacular views of even more seals basking on the sand, or looking after their pups. It’s a truly wonderful sight and worth the walk. Please remember though, these seals are dangerous if you get too close to them. Selfies are not a good idea, especially in the winter months. If you disturb the mothers, they won't come back to their pups. Alternatively, if you want to see more seals, drive along the coast to Horsey and park in one of the car parks.
