The Needles is a row of three stacks of chalk that rise about 30m out of the sea off the western extremity of the Isle of Wight in the English Channel, United Kingdom, close to Alum Bay, and part of Totland, the westernmost civil parish of the Isle of Wight. The Needles Lighthouse stands at the outer, western end of the formation. Built in 1859, it has been automated since 1994.

Not for the faint hearted, if you like driving Grand Prix style with no protective barrier high into the hillside, (57 metres long ) you’ll love the views! But please keep your eyes on the road too!

The collection now incorporates all aspects of local maritime activity from shipbuilding to sailing. The museum displays a selection of objects and images which help to tell the story of Cowes and its important maritime heritage. Free entry

If you only need to pop out for milk , the shop is a 10 minute walk from the chalet , a bit more expensive than a supermarket but handy , run by volunteers

Wild swimming

Ryde, Fishbourne and Seaview all have great sea spots to swim outside, as does Sandown Bay (with lifeguards) and Newton Creek. And if you can brave the cold, then Blackgang Naturist Beach is the place to be if you really want to feel the freedom.

Yes you can actually walk around the whole of the Isle of Wight as part of a long, long day if you’re feeling like a real challenge. Best to do near mid-summer so you have enough daylight, this 70 mile massive walk along the entire coastal path is another bucket list item of mine
