This is a vegetable/fruit store that is incredibly inexpensive. It also has some other goods, like pantry items / dairy etc but those aren’t as well-priced as the produce.
This isn’t immediately near the house but is on the way to it, on the J train line if you ever end up taking that. It is worth making a big haul and taking an Uber home, since the produce is so inexpensive there.

This isn’t near the house, but is a go-to supermarket for many a New Yorker, we all go there even if we don’t live next to it! This particular one is about a 5 minute walk from the Hoyt Schernerhorn subway station on the A C line (the line closest to the house).
You might find one that is more conveniently located to your workplace or school.
It is an American supermarket chain with well-priced products that are consistently good quality and often interesting!

Drinks & Nightlife
Southern comfort food. I love brunch here - I always get the shrimp & grits, served with a white wine, creamy sauce. Go to the bar next door if the wait is too long - they serve the same food.

This is a pretty inexpensive fish store but also very affordable pickup dinner option if you like fish - I usually get the steamed veggie + fish option, healthy, cheap and delicious. This is a hole in the wall type of place, not really a destination for an evening.

This place serves Japanese breakfast, which is a unique and aesthetic experience. It is very tiny (seats maybe 10 people) so come early in the morning on a weekday preferably.
