Because the heir of Shorncliffe Lodge Phillip Sassoon sold the Lodge at auction in 1912 in order to build this much grander house for entertaining in bigger style. 1) Book 2 days in advance tea there - they have the best scones I have ever eaten in Britain. It is served in the jungle room 2) Have early dinner at the garden room, around 7pm in summer - come an hour early and stroll the gardens and enjoy the truly exhilarating views across Romney Marsh to the sea. This is also the best time to see the lions and other predators as twilight is the time the y become active. You can wander from the gardens straight into the animal park..and at that time the last day visitors will have left so it is quiet and magic.

Watch the tide!! Go along the rocks to the mud cliffs - some of the most amazing fossils (Ammonites) can be peeled out of the mud there or you find them all cleaned for you by the sea in between the rocks. Great for kids as success is guaranteed. http://www.discoveringfossils.co.uk/ammonites.htm - that and the view onto the white cliffs is pretty good.

..it has a very strange, stark atmosphere - quite a few artist live here (Derek Jarman, the filmmaker had his cottage and garden here - black house with yellow painted windows - it is still there). The nuclear power station might be a put off. There is an ancient lighthouse - a couple of pubs and a little steam railways which takes you all the way back to Hythe.
