Perched at 8300 ft, with a population of 1300, it's about 5 miles up the road from the house. Walk through the town, or keep walking up the road out of town for some good high-altitude exercise. Yes, the 2-room school house is still in use! There's a small close-by too.
Fourth of July is quite the event. The day starts with a pancake breakfast outside the 2-room school house, then the local parade, followed by food and music at the Gold Hill Inn.

Switzerland Trail is the old narrow-gage railroad bed between Denver/Boulder and the mining communities west of Boulder.
Accessed at the west end of Fourmile Canyon Drive, you can take the 4-wheel road to the left up Sugarloaf Mountain and on to Nederland, or the 4-wheel road to the right up to Gold Hill. Additional information at the house.
