Food scene

Oh, what isn't there to love about "the Squirrel?" Between wood-fired breads and pizzas and their sweets, it is hard to pick. For breakfast head in for Chaga Chai, Mexican Mochas, local teas, or artisan espresso with a Sourdough Ham and Gruyere Croissant. Lunch? Great sandwiches and home-made rhubarb ade. Dinner? Wood-fired pizza! It is within walking distance, fresh, local, and even sell produce from a local farm. What a total gem. Must Try their Olive-Herb Fougasse (don't ask, just try), black brownies (another don't ask, just try), and their rugelach.

This little purple pizzeria is a great spot to stop in and have pizza after visiting the river. A local favorite for hummus platters, delicious greek salads, and home-run pizza every time. There is often live music playing out on the patio, and lots of great people watching along main street. Great beer selection! Take your picture in front of the pizza "wings" and enjoy the scene.

A quirky airstream serving up delicious, flavorful, and fresh food. Known for their "spinach bread" across the state, but serving up on-point specials every day. Their lime-ade is a home run, as are their breakfast burritos.

Sustainable Farming-- Alaska Style! The Grove is a friendly spot to check out what framing in Alaska looks like. Check out their fields, animals-- and the "Sistine Chapel" of Alaska. Also, The Grove now offers reindeer tours! I highly recommend heading over to check out their property and meet the critters.

Sightseeing

"TAT," as it is locally known, is a year-round employer of world class bush pilots. Hop into one of their iconic deHavilland Otters on skis, and take a tour through the Alaska Range that will make you see just how big Alaska can be. You can even and on the Ruth Glacier and see where mountaineers begin their Denali climb. Bonus points? Meet their airport cat "Beaver," and hear stories from the local pilots. A trip into the Alaska Range with TAT should not be missed.

Talkeetna means "Place where three rivers meet." No-one is more qualified to take you out to experience these places, than the captains at Mahay's River Guides. Any trip you take with these folks will be a winner. I love the Devil's Canyon trip-- Class V whitewater in a jet boat? Amazing. Do Not Miss. And, you never know what kind of wildlife you will get to see on the river.
