Ocracoke's Wild Ponies are penned for their protection and cared for by the National Park Service. They have 188 acres of sound-side beach and marsh to explore but tend to hang around their paddocks and stables, the best time to go is feeding time. (Usually around 3:00 PM) You can visit them at the Ocracoke Pony Pens located off Highway 12. . Also across the highway is a nice parking area with beach access for easy shelling.

Kennel

This is the only kennel on the island. They have a great reputation. If you need to bring your pet with you and you are staying in a home that does not allow pets, I highly recommend that you consider this kennel as a place for them to stay. They have 24-hour access to your pet, air-conditioned kennels. You can pick up your pet, take them to the beach or around the village and drop them back off at the kennel before returning to your rental. I personally have used them years ago when I had a dog and she loved it there. She wanted to stay longer when I went to pick her up!

Food scene

A bit pricey but great food. Has an intimate feel. Great date night. And the bartender makes a great martini!

A local favorite. You can get pizza for the kids and great seafood too. More reasonably priced than other places. Get a jar of the fig preserves from Jason. I let him have all the figs from my tree and he also was able to get other local figs that go into his preserves. Delish!

Verkehrsmittel

There are no bridges to Ocracoke Island.

You have to drive your car onto one of the NC Ferrys. Coming from points North normally take the Hatteras Ferry. The Hatteras Ferry is free but is first come first serve. Coming from NC mainland would either take the Cedar Island or Swan Quarter ferrys. These two ferrys have a toll and it is wise to make reservations. Call 1-800-BY FERRY for information.

Drive on the beach if you have a 4 wheel drive

You must get a permit from the National Park Service. There is a fee. You can purchase them online https://www.nps.gov/caha/planyourvisit/permitsandreservations.htm
