Zona Centro

El Jardin is the center of activity for holidays, weekends, and all sorts of celebrations. Weddings at St. Michael's church are fun to see with the mojigangas (huge puppets made to look like the bride and groom), flower covered burros sometimes carrying tequila to hand out to the crowd, mariachi music, and occasionally a fairy tale coach for the bride and groom.
The plaza principal is called El Jardin and is only a 10 minute walk from the condo. Go out the back gate to Santo Domingo and simply walk down the hill.

This very walkable neighborhood is a fun place to explore. It is known for the many murals and a wonderful new walking trail along the river. Don’t miss the old mill site, called Fabrica Aurora, now turned into an impressive collection of art galleries and other specialty stores.

I discovered this cool and serene little restaurant, La Golandrina, during a boisterous celebration when I was seeking some peace and a cool drink. I looked in the door and was drawn right in. The food was good, inexpensive, the vibe calm. Patio or indoor rooms.

Great dinners and cocktails. Often a few musicians will play for your enjoyment. Try the Volcano, a specialty that can serve 2 -4 people!

Highly recommend this little restaurant with excellent healthy choices for breakfast and lunch. Try their smoothies and other juices. It's a great place to have lunch after browsing the Artisan Market which starts at the Ignacio Ramirez on Collegio, and goes down stairs for several blocks.

For one thing it is inside the wonderful library, the Biblioteca! It's in an old hacienda, and it is a nice place to go; peruse the books and DVD's to buy or take out a library book. The giftshop has wonderful things too. A quiet and lovely place to have lunch.

Sightseeing

This hot springs water park is near the old town of Atotonilco, but a taxi or bus can take you there. They have a small restaurant that serves authentic Mexican food. There are water slides for the kids and swimming pools and a large hot tub too. The grounds are pristine. There are also 3 other hot springs parks in the general vicinity, one called La Gruta. Check your cell phone for more information.

Welcome to San Miguel de Allende!

San Miguel is an old city and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Pueblo Magico. Everything in Centro is old, the buildings, the cobblestone streets and rock sidewalks, the plumbing, all very charming but also sometimes challenging. My first bit of advice is to wear the most comfortable and supportive shoes you can find. It is a very walkable city, and the walking is on cobblestones or rock pavers, and there are many hills. Don't drink untreated water or get drinks that use untreated water to make the ice. Ice cubes are generally safe, but the ice chipped off a big block is not.
