Recreational Activities

Stockton Lake is a tidal body of slow-moving water, making it very easy for paddle boarding and kayaking. The water is particularly calm in morning, and the late afternoon lighting makes sunsets amazing.

A great place for kids. It's a short walk from the house, and several ballfields, an inline hockey rink, skatepark, and a playground for the toddlers.

The well-known bike path starts in Manasquan, and runs over 5 miles to Allaire State Park. The trail is a fun place to ride. As I recall, it was constructed in the early 1970's on a former railroad bed.

About a 15-minute drive from the house, the park is best known for its restored 19th century ironworks, Allaire Village, located inside the park. The park offers charcoal grilles, tables, playgrounds, and even canoe rentals. The Manasquan river flows through the park, and there's a railroad excursion, the Pine Creek Railroad, operated by the NJ Museum of Transportation.

I'd be remiss if I didn't include Jenkinson's Boardwalk. I don't get there very often. But when my cousins come and visit, it's the first stop on their list! There are plenty of amusements and cools shops.

Sightseeing

Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008, the life station is one of my favorite sites in Squan. I'm no historian, so please don't quote me on this, but's a little-known fact that the Manasquan inlet was originally located on or near Ocean Ave, where the house is located. About 100 years ago, when a state grant entitled developers to put bulkheads all throughout the town as a means contain tidal boundaries, the inlet was relocated about a mile away to the south side of Manasquan. Because of the number of lakes in Point Pleasant close to the shoreline, many consider the Manasquan inlet the starting point of the intercoastal waterway, which runs nearly the entire length of the eastern seaboard!

Fisherman's Cove Conservation area overlooks the Manasquan inlet and Point Pleasant. The water is calm and great for youngsters since there are no waves inland. There are amazing birds in the area, and trails as well.

If you're a hiking enthusiast, the Manasquan Reservoir Park hosts about 5 trails that range in distance. It's beautiful.

At first glance, many people find Convention Hall fairly ordinary. Perhaps I was one of those people. But then I learned about its history, and all the great Rock and Roll artists that performed here. To name a few: Ray Charles, The Beach Boys, The Doors, Janis Joplin, Kiss, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, The Who, Led Zeppelin, The Allman Brothers, Van Halen, Lynyrd Skynyrd - the list goes on and on. But perhaps most of all, NJ native Bruce Springsteen, who held rehearsals at Convention Hall for some time, open to the public and over holidays. The large lighted sign on the front of the convention center reads "Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J." in homage to Springsteen's 1973 debut album. Now it's one of my favorite places to stroll through and have a coffee or ice cream.

Spike's is one of my favorite restaurants in the area. It's super small and casual, and they take no reservations. I usually sit at the bar, but the interior picnic tables are fun too. It's BYOB.

If you're a vegan, Kaya's Kitchen is one of the best. Truly, you don't have to be a vegan to enjoy the food here. It's delicious.

This is another favorite of mine. It's located in Asbury Park on the boardwalk. Whether you're into the music scene, beach or people-watching, I always enjoy a visit to the Asbury beach. Be sure to stop inside the Asbury Park Convention Hall.

I must've driven by Surf Tace 1,000 times, probably more, before finally trying it. My kids would always go there with friends, because it was fun and inexpensive. I finally decided to stop in and, wow, I was pleasantly surprised! Their food is good! It's not fancy, and always fresh. I enjoy the guacamole and fajita.
