When ordering give code: G205 to receive a free tropical smoothie with any meal purchase. This small, family-run business has been serving HI vibes and locally sourced, organic, plant-based food and drinks in Honoka'a, a quaint old sugar plantation town on the NE side of the Big Island, for over 7 years. If you're looking for something nutritious and scrumptious, check them out for a tropical smoothie, a refreshing sparkling honey kombucha jun, sandwiches, salads and various sweet and savoury bowls. They also have a cute little store front where they sell an array of plant-based goodies to grab and go. They operate on Hawaiian time so call first to check their hours: 802-7650-292. Our favourite dish is the Reuben sandwich. For something sweet, their ICE CREAM SANDWICHES ARE THE BOMB! Dairy free, made with coconut creme and an array of flavour options.

If you enjoy the ocean and are looking for something a little different to do we highly recommend booking a morning out to sea with the wonderful crew on Da Whale Boat. This small family owned and operated business takes pride in excellence and ensure a memorable experience for their guests whilst maintaining the highest levels of safety at all times. What makes their snorkel trips different? 1) The attentiveness and expertise of their guides. They don’t just throw you in the ocean hoping you see something cool (ask around, most boats do this). So much is missed when you don’t know what you are looking for. Every trip is personalized, always with your safety, capabilities in the ocean, and ocean adventure requests in mind. 2) Their delicious treats after the snorkel. They cater delicious choc-chip macadamia nut cookies and fresh cut pineapple and provide fruit juice and sparkling water as refreshment. 3) The message and gift of reducing our impact our planet they share to hopefully inspire you to help make our ocean/world a better place. All guests on board receive a beautifully handcrafted, functional gift that helps highlight Da Whale Boat's message of sustainability.

An easy going, windswept hike along the Southern most shore of Hawai'i that ends up at a stunning olivine green sands beach. You can either hike (3 miles approx 50mins to an hour each way) or jump on the back of a locals truck and pay the $20 each way fee. I recommend the hike. And i use the term hike loosely. It's more of an enjoyable coastal stroll. Note that there are only 4 green sands beaches on the planet so this is a special day trip to try to squeeze in. Please leave only your footprints behind (no rubbish).

Hawaii is one of the most ecologically diverse places in the world where you can find 8 out of the worlds 13 climate zones such as tropical monsoon, tundra and desert within an hour drive. If you visit during the winter, you may even get to experience snow and subzero temperatures at the summit of Mauna Kea. What activities are you planning on during your stay? Take these things into consideration when packing for your trip.

Public Transport is Poor on the Big Island

So definitely rent a vehicle... unless you plan on trying your hand at hitch hiking!

Basic words, phrases and local "pidgin" slang

Aloha! While nearly everyone you run into will speak English it’s always handy and feels good to know a few words. Locals may mix in Hawaiian without even realizing it so check out this website for a good beginners guide to some basic Hawaiian words, phrases as well as local slang, known as pidgin. https://www.jtgtravel.com/north-america/hawaii/basic-hawaiian-phrases/

Instead of a thumbs up, try a SHAKA

In Hawaii, everyone from keiki (children) to kupuna (elders) uses the shaka to express friendship, gratitude, goodwill, encouragement and unity. A little wave of the hand spreads a lot of aloha. A greeting gesture in which the thumb and little finger are extended while curling the three middle fingers in a semi-fist down toward the palm. It can be used to express a variety of positive meanings including "hello" and "goodbye".

Farmers Markets

It's always fun wandering around local farmers markets chatting to locals, residents & visitors alike. "Shopping small" is a wonderful way to support small businesses, boost the local economy & positively impact individuals/families rather than big impersonal businesses. Here is a list of some of the best farmers markets to visit: Waikoloa Night Market - every Saturday 4-8pm at the Waikoloa Plaza. Hilo Farmers Market - every Wednesday & Saturday 7am-3pm at Hilo Bayfront Waimea Farmers Markets - various markets are held in Waimea town every Saturday

Hit up the local supermarket and stock up

Our condo is a 5 min drive from the Waikoloa shopping complex. There you will find a large, well-stocked, locally owned grocery store called KTA. Stop by & grab the basics. That way you don't necessarily have to eat out every single day. Load up on fresh fruit to chop up so you can make some fruit cocktails for brekky. Grab some bread & fillings to make sandwiches for a picnic lunch. Eating out is always a treat but it's equally as lovely relaxing in the comfort of your breezy lanai (balcony) enjoy a yummy home cooked dinner, sipping on a tasty cocktail that you whipped up yourself!
