There's something for everyone on the moderately-priced, varied menu. It's fun to sit either indoors or in the covered patio area, enjoying Mediterranean food and interesting drinks.

Armenian and Mediterranean specialties are served up in a lovely old courtyard just inside the Jaffa Gate. Check out the 2000-year-old Roman milestone pillar! Inexpensive food, friendly service.

Our favorite hummus joint, on the Via Dolorosa in the Old City. You'll probably have to squeeze in to a table with strangers (there's more room upstairs) but the hummus, which is constantly being prepared right there, is worth it. Inexpensive and very informal.

Tucked into the First Station, the old Ottoman-era railway station complex in Jerusalem, which is itself worth a visit. Terrific food, careful service. On the expensive side, well worth it

We like this place for the reasonably-priced bar food and the very friendly service. Drinks are not cheap but two can share a pint of cherry beer and enjoy people-watching over a hearty portion of fish and chips. Kid-friendly.

The Sabbath in Jerusalem

Most of West Jerusalem shuts down at sundown on Friday and Jewish holiday eves; many eateries and some shops will reopen only after sundown Saturday. Public transportation also stops on Friday afternoon so plan your excursions accordingly. East Jerusalem and the Old City, as well as many non-Kosher pubs and restaurants, will welcome guests throughout the weekend. Museums which are open on Saturday may be closed on Sunday, which is a regular weekday in Israel.
Verkehrsmittel

Buses and the light rail are close by and convenient.

Many kiosks and small groceries sell a multi-use magnetic card which is valid on buses and the light rail. Each journey costs NIS 6 and you can load the card in advance with the desired number of trips. Note that each person will need a separate card. Don't forget to validate your card on entering the bus or train using the machine near the door.

Airport Transport

At the airport there is a shared taxi service called Nesher which will drive you to any address in Jerusalem for approximately $20 per person. Note that they will wait till the vehicle is full before departing and they may make various stops to drop off passengers before you arrive. They do not operate on the Sabbath and holidays but you can take a private taxi (called a "special") for approximately $100.
