Rose Hall is an eighteenth-century plantation manor house, and the home of Jamaica's most famous ghost—the White Witch of Rose Hall. Of the 700 great houses that once served as the homes of Jamaica's wealthy plantation owners, only fifteen remain today, the others having been burned to the ground by slaves during the Great Jamaican Slave revolt of 1831-32. Of these remaining manor houses, Rose Hall is the most well known—and the most infamous.

In 1739 by the Treaty that ended the first Maroon War 1,500 acres between here and Trelawny Town (now called FLAGSTAFF) were ceded to the Maroons led by the redoubtable Cudjoe. The second Maroon War erupted in 1795 after the British had the temerity to flog a Trelawny Town Maroon in Montego Bay.

It was originally named Charles Square, but was later renamed in honor of Sam Sharpe, a Jamaican National hero, and anti-slavery activist.
The main attraction to the area is the monument, commemorating the struggles faced by Sam Sharpe.
