Pen-doll Rocks just outside Bulith Wells is an amazing wild swimming location. A lovely stretch of the Wye with a variety of flat rocks and wooden planks that connect them and fairly easy access to the water. There is a current downstream and a cliff that the fearless jump from into the water. Access is over the style and down the hill from the second lay-by just to the north of the Royal Welsh Showground outside Builth Wells (approximately 7 miles from Red Kite Estate).

Builth Wells

Sightseeing
You might like to take the wonderfully scenic route back to Red Kite Estate, over the mountain road, taking in the abandoned lead mines and Elan Valley Reservoirs on the way. There is a series of reservoirs and breathtaking dams, created by the Victorians to feed water to the industrial hub of England in Birmingham, using unimaginable amounts of stone! There is a lovely scenic road that skirts the reservoirs and brings you back into Rhayader. Well worth it.

If you are feeling perky of a Saturday night and like live music, you could do worse than head down to Builth Wells high street at around 10.30 and check out the White Hart pub, where landlord Darren plays his weekly session. It’s gratifyingly identical from one week to the next, save that the customers change and there is always a good energy and a real sense of the locals going out to enjoy themselves (and they really don’t care who is watching)!
