Near CMU, Pitt, Oakland, Downtown-4
Welcome to The Mellor House Bed & Breakfast! The room can accommodate one adult and includes a full breakfast. No smoking allowed. Weekly and monthly rates at reduced rates will appear after you proceed through the reservation process. The room: Spacious and bright, this beautifully restored and updated third floor bedroom includes a comfortable single bed. Although the room is small, a study desk with an antique chair is available for writing or study. A lovely slipper chair, with its back pillow, is perfect for reading. Accommodations include off-street parking as well as a beautiful park-like setting with perennial gardens, pond and outdoor seating. The home: This lovely Victorian home was built in 1891 for the family of Michael R. Haymaker. Haymaker was a western Pennsylvania oil and natural gas producer. The house, constructed in the Queen Anne style characterized by a non-symmetrical house shape and facade, steeply pitched roof, fluted chimneys and ornamental brick and woodwork. The home was built on a lot that was formerly part of the grounds of the nearby Gardner Mansion. Edgewood was Pittsburgh's first commuter suburb, at a time when most white-collar Downtown employees lived within walking distance of their workplaces. In 1922, George and Clara Mellor purchased the home. George Mellor was an Edgewood native, and vice-president of the C.C. Mellor Company, a Downtown Pittsburgh musical instrument store. Mellor's father, Charles Chauncey Mellor, was an early homeowner in Edgewood. He was the son of Edgewood's C.C. Mellor, for whom the Library was named. The Library is located across the street, within a block of the Mellor House B&B. The community: Edgewood Borough was founded in 1888. The borough is located 7 miles from downtown Pittsburgh and has a population of 3,311 in its .92 square miles. Edgewood Borough combines the tree-lined beauty of an old Pennsylvania town with the advantages of an unbeatable suburban locale. Our local police force makes sure that our community is safe and secure. And, The Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation has designated Edgewood a historic district. Edgewood Borough is located within walking distance of Regent Square and beautiful 476 acre Frick Park, with natural trails, as well as tennis courts. Regent Square boasts many interesting shops and local eateries. Ann Davis at Typhoon will help will all your lighting needs. Her inventory is set among unusual antiques and gift items. Hepatica is your 'go to' place for beautiful flowers, arrangements and centerpieces. Rachel and her staff are wonderful and talented. I quote from a review: "Rachel is an amazing artist and I can't imagine why anyone would choose another florist." David Knouse at Le Mix Antiques offers an eclectic assortment of furniture, furnishings, pottery and jewelry, both antique and Mid-Century Modern. In the same block, Sherri Goldstein and her staff at The Square Cafe offer vegan options and sidewalk seating. Across the street, D's Six Pax & Dogz is home to more than 1,000 craft micro-brews, imports and domestic beers. Root 174 believes in cooking with produce that is in season and sourced locally when possible. Their menu changes often, updated on their website by 3:30 daily. Annette and her crew at Styles by Cardamone offer many spa services including hair cuts, color, highlights, mani/pedi. Her masseuse will come to the house for your massage, by advance request. The Edgewood Club at the corner of Pennwood and West Swissvale Avenues is located across the street, and in the same block as the Mellor House B&B. The historic building also houses the C.C. Mellor Library, one of the only libraries funded by Dale Carnegie not carrying his name. In 1916 it was decided that combining forces to raise funds for and construct a facility containing a library would be in everyone's best interest. The property was purchased by the Club from the Charles Mellor family at a greatly reduced price because of its intended community-centered use. The Edgewood Club is a popular venue for wedding receptions. More information can be found at the Club's website at (website hidden). The Mellor House B&B would be a delightful place for the bridal party to prepare! Or, envision pictures in the magnificent garden, featured on the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden Tour 2013. (Note: The Edgewood CLUB is NOT to be confused with the Edgewood COUNTRY Club, which is actually in nearby Churchill, PA.) The Edgewood Club and CC Mellor Library building which was formally opened in 1918, is interesting architecturally because it is exactly fitted to its triangular plot. The building, designed by architect Edward B. Lee, is white stucco with a Spanish tile roof, a pergola and line of columns. According to Franklin Toker, author of "Pittsburgh: An Urban Portrait," it is "a public monument...altogether one of the best public buildings in the city." Its unique architecture accentuates the building as a focal point within the community. Negotiable: For guests who are interested in long stays we will offer special rates and negotiate on price depending on the season, demand, and availability. Please send an inquiry with details. The Mellor House offers free Wireless High Speed Internet service, accessible throughout the house. You are welcome to enjoy the first floor living room, with two comfy couches and a desk. The large front window makes it a light and bright space. Community: The nearby Edgewood Towne Center is a large neighborhood shopping center, within walking distance of the Mellor House B&B. The anchor store is a privately owned and newly renovated grocery store, Giant Eagle Market District. Other stores include Ashley Stewart, AT&T, Burton’s Total Pets, Dollar Tree, Dots, Foot Locker, Gamestop, Habitat for Humanity Restore, H&R Block, How Lee Chinese Restaurant, Katsur Dental, Kmart, Mirror Image Salon, Planet Fitness (24 hours), Radio Shack, Rainbow Kids, Sally Beauty, Scoops Sports Bar, Sneaker Villa, Subway, Supernails and PA Wine & Spirits Liquor Store. On the outer perimeter of the Towne Center, you will find Applebees, a Beer Distributorship, Eat n’ Park, PNC Bank, Taco Bell and Wendy’s. Oh, and can't forget to mention my favorite dentists at Edgewood Dental Associates, also on the outer perimeter. The house is no more than a 15 minute drive from great attractions such as The Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium. To the south, Kennywood Amusement Park, Sandcastle Water Park and The Waterfront Mall are about 4.0 miles, 11 minutes. The entrance ramp to 376 East and West (also known as "The Parkway"), is located 0.3 miles from the house, at the end of the street. Squirrel Hill is 2.5 miles or about 9 minutes from the house, which is 6 miles or 13 minutes from Oakland, and 7.5 miles or 20 minutes from Downtown Pittsburgh and the Cultural District. Public transportation to all points can be reached within a short distance of the house. Nearby is a Park & Ride, as well as a main stop on the East Busway bus route. Your hostess and proprietor, Kate, will help you with all your transportation information needs.
