Sightseeing

There are so many places to see in the area, here are a few of my favourites.
Mousehole is a picturesque fishing village on the south coast of Cornwall, just a few miles west of the market town of Penzance. It was ransacked by the Spaniards in July 1595 when the entire village, apart from one house, was burnt to the ground. That house still stands today. A hundred years ago Mousehole was a bustling port, crowded with local fishing boats, landing pilchards. Each year, early in November, timber beams are laid across the narrow harbour entrance, to protect the village from the worst of the winter gales. Even so waves can still be seen breaking over the harbour wall at high tide on a strong southerly wind.

The north coast fishing town of St Ives is one of Cornwall's best loved destinations, and with obvious reason. The town is built on a narrow peninsula fringed with sandy beaches. Radiating out from the idyllic harbour are a maze of painfully quaint cobbled streets lined with fishermen's cottages. And if all this wasn't enough, St Ives has a rich artistic heritage which is celebrated with a plethora of galleries from the small to the internationally acclaimed. To use a well worn cliché, there is something for everyone in St Ives. If you can, take the train from Penzance and sit on the right hand side for fantastic views.

St Michaels Mount is located 3 miles east of Penzance and is one of the treasures of Cornwall. Set on an island a few hundred yards off-shore from the ancient town of Marazion and in the heart of Mounts Bay, the castle - now maintained by the National Trust - has for centuries been the home of the St Aubyn family. Originally, the building was a Benedictine Priory which had religious links with the equally famous Mont St Michel in Normandy, France. Subsequently, it became a fortified castle which saw action during the English Civil War and today still has a battery of cannon. The island served as a major port in earlier times and is thought to be the island of Ictis which was the centre for the export of Cornish tin and copper to the Greeks and Romans in pre-historic times. Today, the Island and Castle are open to the public every weekday and most weekends during the summer and on a limited basis during the winter. Marazion & the Causeway There is an attractive little harbour with some shops and the Sail Loft Restaurant. While access to the island is easy at low tide when the granite causeway is opened for pedestrian crossings, there are ferry boat services running at high tide during the summer.

Porthleven is the most southerly working port in the United Kingdom and boasts a picturesque harbour, with some interesting old buildings. The harbour faces south west into the prevailing wind and consequently the harbour construction and sea walls are massive. During winter storms, people visit the town to watch the waves crashing over the sea defences. The harbour once had a fleet of more than 100 drifters used to fish pilchard and mackerel.

Porthminster Beach sits underneath the hillside in front of St Ives train station and is one of the first glimpses visitors get when arriving into the town. Quite simply, Porthminster Beach is stunning, often looking Mediterranean even in Winter. It is a large, sandy beach and is usually very sheltered, making it an ideal place for young children to play. It is one of the cleanest beaches in the South West and has been given the prestigious Blue Flag Award which guarantees the highest of standards. The beach is lifeguarded between May and September and a selection of water sports hire and lessons are available. For a bite to eat, the beach benefits from an award winning seafood restaurant, which is nestled beneath the steep slopes of Porthminster Point and enjoys unbeatable and uninterrupted views across St Ives Bay to Godrevy Lighthouse. The cafe is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner and a selection of homemade patisserie and locally roasted fine coffees are available all day long. If you’re looking something a little more ‘thirst quenching’ look no further than the Beach or Garden Bar, and if you’ve forgotten any beach essentials there are several shops to chose from.

The Minack Theatre is Cornwall's world famous open-air theatre, carved into the granite cliff and set in glorious gardens overlooking the spectacular panorama of Porthcurno Bay. A place like no other, the world-famous Minack theatre is a must-see for visitors to Cornwall. Perched on rugged cliffs over-looking the spectacular panorama of Porthcurno Bay, you might think ancient Greeks had carved it from the granite. In fact, less than a century ago it was a rough gully of gorse and heather dropping dizzily down to the sea. Today the theatre welcomes you to discover the extraordinary story of how it was created and experience the magic of live performance in this iconic space. The Minack stages a full programme of live performances and at other times you are welcome to explore the dramatic site and enjoy the glorious sub-tropical gardens full of exotic plants.
