The Jorhat Gymkhana Club (JGC) was built in 1876. It was the second such club in India; the first was built in Bombay. The club house has been beautifully preserved, with its original structure having survived several of Assam's major earthquakes. Unlike several of Assam's tea clubs that have seen dwindling attendance in recent times, the JGC still boasts active participation from its members. In fact, it hosts an annual horse race, a flower show and several golf and sporting events. There is an 18-hole golf course next to the club house. Non-members are welcome to use it by paying a reasonable fee of Rs. 300. Until the early 1980s, the JGC had a sizeable expatriate membership too. This was because several English, Scottish and Irish planters were based in the tea estates around Jorhat. Unlike most parts of India, where there was a large exodus of expats following the declaration of independence in 1947, the scenario in Assam was different. The exodus only happened during internal disturbances that began in the early 1980s. KLM and British Airways (BA) were active sponsors of club events. The main bar is still called the BOAC bar. BOAC stood for British Overseas Airways Corporation; it was BA's predecessor. The JGC's hallmark is probably its bartender Apu. His signature cocktail is called Lady on Fire. The wizened old Naga gentleman has been a part of the club since 1962. He is a treasure trove of stories. And I've had the privilege of listening in to his narrations of a bygone era. Apu undoubtedly is an institution in himself.
