Fairy Cave of Astrakoi (only 33 minutes driving from us , 23 km) In Greek it is called Neraidospilia: The cave is not so big, but the whole area and pathway along the river is beautiful and perfect for a day away of the city. It is good idea to bring some wine and cheese with you and spent couple of hours enjoying beautiful views of lakes in lush greens and mountains around. Remember to take the rubbishes with you upon departure. Bear in mind that there is no mobile phone signal coverage here. In the cave, there is one of the springs of the Astrakoi aqueduct, which supplied part of the water necessary for the city of Heraklion at the beginning of the 20th century. Legend has it that this cave, deeply set in the gorge with its numerous springs, clear running waters and lush vegetation, had been chosen by the Fairies (neraides, ancient Greek mythology Nereids) as their home! One night, a young lyre-player, heard their song and his curiosity led him to the cave. He saw the fairies there, dancing and singing bathed in light and dressed in transparent veils! Enchanted by the sweet melody in the air and their dance, he picked his lyre and accompanied their dance

An easy Canyon to walk. The river that is through the Canyon helps many trees and plants to grow and give to the Gove a perfect match.

Fairy Cave of Astrakon - Neraidospilios In the Karteros Gorge near the Astraki River is the Fairy Cave – Neraidospilios. There are many springs around this area, it is said that the sound of the springs resemble gentle crying especially following rain when there is a bubbling sound, hence the myth of the crying fairy. A great walk and adventure for spring & autumn. Too hot and exposed in summer and too slippery under foot in winter. Take a picnic.
