Kornwerderzand. Distance: 125 km. (through the beauty of Friesland / Third Best in Europe, Lonely Planet 2018) The Afsluitdijk is the water barrier between North Holland and Friesland, which closes the IJsselmeer from the Wadden Sea. The dam takes its name from this (aflsuiten = Closing down) The Afsluitdijk is important to protect the Netherlands against flooding. The Afsluitdijk is part of the Zuiderzee Works. Construction began in 1927. In 1932 the last closing hole, the Vlieter, was closed. A year later, the dike was opened to road traffic. At the place where the Afsluitdijk was closed, a monument was erected, the Vlietermonument. On the Afsluitdijk, near Kornwerderzand, there is a striking building, like a head of foam on the dike: The Afsluitdijk Wadden Center. This center offers a total experience about Unesco World Heritage Wadden Sea, the unique Fish Migration River, the IJsselmeer region and not to mention the Afsluitdijk itself.

The Afsluitdijk (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɑfslœyˌdɛik], Frisian: Ofslútdyk; English: Closure Dike) is a major causeway in the Netherlands, constructed between 1927 and 1932 and running from Den Oever on Wieringen in North Holland province, to the village of Zurich in Friesland province, over a length of 32 kilometres (20 mi) and a width of 90 metres (300 ft), at an initial height of 7.25 metres (23.8 ft) above sea-level. It is a fundamental part of the larger Zuiderzee Works, damming off the Zuiderzee, a salt water inlet of the North Sea, and turning it into the fresh water lake of the IJsselmeer. The Afsluitdijk was the initial demonstration site for a 130 kilometres per hour (81 mph) speed

Hollands biggest Dijk (protectionwall) that protects us from the ocean. On the left side its saltwater and the right is freshwater when you enter it from our side. Lots off guests think its impressive to see how we protect our country from fludding.
