Only a quarter of a mile further down Rt 2 from our turn-off, the Heybrook Lookout hike is the one to bust out early in the morning or if you're looking for a shorter day hike. With 700ft elevation gain it has some good steep parts, and the views from the old fire lookout tower are incredible on a clear day. Look for Mt Baring, Mt Gunn, Mt Index.
Heybrook Lookout is a short and moderately steep hike through a fern and moss covered forest to a fun, staircase-ridden lookout with great views of the nearby mountains. If you are introducing someone to hiking, limited on time, or trying to add on another hike or activity in the area, this is the hike for you.
Easy 1.5 miles. Great for kids. Big 60' wooden structure at the top to get a great view.
Heybrook lookout is about a mile long hike accessible right off of Hwy2. No parking pass is required, during hiking season the parking lot fills up fast, however, it does not take long for a parking spot to become available. It takes about 30-45 minutes one way. Top of the trail features a tall wood built fire lookout tower that offers hikers wonderful 360 degree views of the surrounding mountains. A small trail heading east from the lookout structure will lead you to a composting toilet placed hidden in the forest. Recharge Chalet is located in a spectacular spot and offers "private" access to alternative trailhead to reach Heybrook lookout on a longer, however much less steep and very private forest service road. Grab our hiking poles from the utility room, water bottle from the fridge, snacks from our snack basket, leave your car charging in our driveway and head just over the railroad tracks to a forest service road that will take you to Heybrook.......
