There are several entrances to the park, be sure and allow plenty of time to drive it and see the highlights. Wildlife Loop, Sylvan Lake, Pigtail bridges, Tunnels and the Game Lodge all are worth a look. Bring binoculars and a camera. Expect to see Bison, Mountain Goats, Rams and the famous begging…
the natural beauty of the majestic bison, the open spaces, the birds and other wildlife. Lakes, and hiking trails, restaurants, too.
Custer State Park is South Dakota's first and largest. The park offers incredible wildlife viewing, hiking, climbing, mountain biking, swimming and more. Incredible beauty abounds but don't miss taking the game loop drive and stopping into the game lodge after.
Custer State Park is a must and you must drive the whole Wildlife Loop of the Park and explore the side roads. You will love the buffalo--but keep your distance for safety reasons. Also the prairie dog towns are fascinating to watch.
The park is the largest state park with 71,000 acres of land and home to over 1,300 bison. The park is full of scenic drives and great hiking trails. Make sure to make it to Black Elk Peak which is 7,242 feet and the highest point in the U.S. east of the Rocky Mountains.
There are so many awesome areas in Custer State park. Drive the wildlife loop to see the free roaming buffalo, prairie dogs, antelope, and wild donkeys. Or drive up to Sylvan lake and take an adventure on the Sunday Gulch trail (moderate to hard level due to the bouldering you will need to do).
One of my favorite places to visit several times a year! Great wildlife, scenery, camping, lakes, dining. Spend a day there!

“One of our favorite things to do is ride the trails on our UTV as a family. If we get back to the cabin but don’t feel like cooking, Lewis’s is the closest restaurant and is well known for the best burgers in town. ”
